Before we talk about Britain ditching the monarchy for a republic, let's talk about writing down their damn constitution in a single document.

Right now, it's written down on about 30,000 different napkins. I don't know how they keep up with it.

"Where's that napkin that the Barons wrote down the Magna Carta on?"

Debating going to London for the funeral.

Another sad case of living through a major historical event!

I agree. And common law is fricked up compared to a civil law system. I gotta remember some jack arse case about a dispute on the price of a sack of potatoes from the 17th century presided over by the ever present but notorious Judge Hand?

Let's keep Common Law. It allows enough adaptability for the law to be applied to unforeseen cases.

Edit: Also, it provides a check on the legislature, at least in the American system.

In the British system, the Supreme Court of UK has stated that Parliamentary Sovereignty is a a fundamental Constitutional tenet. Meaning, the legislature has final say-so in the law.

So, it works well for the US, but probably not so much for the UK. But that can be fixed by abandoning Parliamentary Sovereignty with a codified Constitution.

It you truly believe in "natural rights" jurisprudence (i.e., that people are born with rights rather than given rights) and the U.S. Constitution's Ninth Amendment, which states that enumeration should not be construed to deny non-enumerated rights, then yes, the Constitution has some built-in flexibility for making decisions.

It's a fundamentally necessary check on the legislature who would be free to curtail any number of natural rights.

London is likely to be declared 'full' according to some British news outlets. They expect over 2000 foreign delegations alone, along with possibly millions of Brits, all of the associated security, etc.

There is also likely to be no lodging available, unless Londoners start renting out their flats to try and beat some of the awful inflation affecting everyone.

But you're likely to have a much better seat staying home and watching the televised proceedings. Plus you will never get anywhere near close to Westminster Abbey.

Security in London is about to be on a scale that we’ve never seen.

Yeah, everyone is going. You’re going to have modern world leaders, previous leaders, their wives/husbands, anyone who has ever served the Royal family, tons of people in the military. Everyone is going to be there but the Russians and North Koreans. You’ll never see a coming together like this ever again in your lifetime.

Yes. The British Empire was the most peaceful organization. They had nothing to do with all the stuff they did in India, Africa. They were so loving

I'm still waiting for examples. Why haven't you been able to provide them?

How very odd.

You're not to know, but I live in England so don't need lodging, and have friends / family in London and within 30 mins so if I wanted to stay the night I could.

Not sure we will do it because we have a young son and it would probably be too much for him, but this is a once in a life time historical event, even seeing the funeral parade and leaving would be an unforgettable memory.

I think we fail to see gratitude of events going on while they happen, despite the sentiments even in this thread.

Yeah, I was going to say, if you didn’t live around there or have a good friend who will let you stay, good luck finding a hotel room. Even dumps are going to be charging like $1600 a night at minimum. No telling what the Ritz is going to charge next week.

See the walking stick and how it’s clearly too big for her? That’s because it isn’t hers, it’s Prince Philip’s, and she was rarely seen without it after his passing.
