I cannot imagine the personal sacrifices that woman has made for the sake of the Crown.
quote:The crown landed on her head. And because of that she never had any chance of a normal, private life away from the court & responsibilities of the crown. She had no opportunity to live a life without being constantly dictated and directed by the establishment that controls the day-to-day responsibilities of the monarch.
What sacrifices?
She handled her position with strength and dignity for 70 yrs, when many in her close family tried to destroy the institution with their own selfish actions.
I'd say QEII sacrificed a lot in her 7 decades as sovereign.

When the Romanov dynasty ended, back to the people meant Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin. When the Hohenzollern and Habsburg dynasties ended, back to the people meant Hitler. When the Italian monarchy ended, back to the people meant Mussolini. Back to the people is generally the excuse to abuse individual liberty even worse than a monarchy.

She could have stepped down at any time she wanted

Well, actually the Weimar Republic preceded the rise of the Nazi Reich and Hitler ascended to a de facto Emperor of a re-ascended German Empire.
Edit: Also, Mussolini's reign as prime minister was during the monarchy of Italty.

So if the monarchy were to be abolished, will the government be returning the Crown Estate back to the Royals? Because the English taxpayer sure makes a lot of dough off of them.

Without a doubt.
Funeral will be beyond massive and epic.
I doubt we’ve ever had someone so beloved and respected and known in human history.
Is going to be the grandest of send-off’s

Agreed
But as far as ‘world leader’, I’d say QE2 is tops

It’s going to be a full Roman Triumph. Some people in the Poliboard think she’s going to be buried by the end of the weekend, but it’s going to take them a while to get their ducks in a row for such a funeral that almost none of us have seen. Winston Churchill was the last person to get a state funeral in the UK, so it’s not even an honor Diana, the Queen’s Mother, or Margaret Thatcher received. It’s going to blow some people’s minds how big this is going to be.

In The Crown, a young Elizabeth was shown praying for her Mother to have a son so that she wouldn’t have to be Queen. She and her sister tried to convince their parents to let Margaret become Queen in place of Elizabeth. So if this account is to be believed Queen Elizabeth spent the bulk of her life steadfastly dedicated to a job she never wanted.
Sounds like sacrifice to me.

Glad I am not the only one who had this song on repeat today.
I'm not like a fan of the song, or the band, or have it on repeat. But I would be remiss not to make a pop culture reference to it.
