just put a little piece of tape over your laptop camera

Microsoft already has a .net version for quantum computing. It's called q.net.
You can download.
You can download.

everyone just going to skip past the "problem calculated to take 10,000 years to solve" How exactly did we decide on this and who has a problem that takes 10,000 years to work?

I'm a moron so bear with me.
I feel like the one thing all these AI panickers are forgetting is the physical implementation.
Is it not a Floating Head?
These computers can be as smart as they want but all it takes is some janitor to walk over and pull a fuse and the shite is fricking done. Obviously that's an oversimplification but you get my point. What effect does all this intelligence have in the physical world? Human still have complete dominion over the physical world. It's not like there's a bunch of Androids or robots walking around functioning like a normal human.
What am I missing here?
I won't be panicking until I see this...

with this computer they solved it in 200 seconds
OT can’t solve simple arithmetic in less than 60 pages.

I certainly don't know for a fact but I can imagine it could be something like this...
Pick a random string of numbers that was, say 1 million digits. Then ask the computer to "guess" the entire string exactly, in order.
If you knew how many "guesses" a non-quantum computer could do in a given amount of time and the probability of getting the correct match (ie once in every 100 trillion tries), you could determine the length of time it should take to calculate.

As powerful as computers are, there are some calculations that they CAN'T do quickly.
For example, let's say you wanted a program to print out a list of all possible ways to win a chess game starting from an initial board. It would take a very long time to do this. Probably years.
Encryption works so well because it exploits the fact that computers suck at doing certain calculations. They CAN do them, but it takes a very long time.
The 10,000 years is just an estimation. If you know how many calculations per second a computer could do and if you know how many calculations exist, then you can estimate the computer's execution time pretty accurately.

Quantum computing is the nuclear weapon of our generation. It will be developed to a certain point but hopefully never used.

Me too. It's got to be better than the aliens that come down and want to probe me once a month.

This tech can crack our best military encryption holding our nuclear footballs in HOURS using simple brute force. The goal is to make a 256 qbit system in the next year or two that could crack that in a literal millisecond.
A 256 physical qubit machine will not be able to break standard encryption. Shor’s algorithm requires error correction which no one has right now, and even then the estimates are millions to billions of qubits. So yes, the end goal is certainly to crack codes but we’re far off and it won’t be milliseconds with current gate speeds.
Additionally, computer scientists have been developing encryption that quantum can’t break. It will continue being an arms race just like encryption has always been.
Reference: I have a PhD in this.

Here's a dumb question. I've always wondered how we know that it was solved correctly. Is it a problem we already know the answer to, or, if the computer solves it do we just assume that the answer is right?
The way we’re doing it now is solving problems we do know the answer to and checking. A big problem (and what RSA encryption is based on) is finding the prime factors of very large numbers. Once you have them it’s just multiplication to verify.
As these computers get larger and more complex there’s a whole field dedicated to trying to benchmark their success.

I am curious as to what the power consumption is for these quantum computers.
Not much different from current data centers. Most of the power is in cooling it down to near 0 K

The first Matrix covered this. First, they rely on solar power. Then, we block the sun. They retaliate by turning human bodies into energy sources while pacifying our brain with artificial relaity.
I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords and wish to serve them in exchange for limited time travel ability.

because we can stop technology from moving forward by just saying no right?
wait for it...
wait for it......

how quickly can this mine a bitcoin?
(asking for a friend)

So you thought of this but our scientists and military hasn’t?
