doesn’t quite scratch that itch of the s2000
If you're looking for the S2000 experience, get a Miata club with the BBR package. That really is the only modern equivalent that will get you into that S2000 size, weight, power and handling window. The S2000 will have a noticeable power difference, but the Miata and it's 15-20 years worth on engineering advancements, is much more sorted with more progressive handling and ultimately if you do track days or autocross, the Miata turns better times. Naturally this assumes both cars are in stock form. If you don't fit in the Miata, look into the 86/BRZ twins or a Corolla GR. I can't recommend a WRX anymore. I used to have a WRX STI about 10 years ago, it was fun, but really unrefined. Some disclosure I own a Miata RF with the BBR package.
The Civic Type R / Integra twins are great drivers. I've had a chance to drive both and another disclosure I own an Integra Type S as well, If you are doing more track driving the Type R is your car, if you are spending most of your time on public roads, the Integra, in my opinion a better choice. Giving a comparison on firmness of the ride and aggressiveness, with 10 being the most firm and aggressive, with its available adjustments the type R covers a range from 7-10 while the Type S covers a range from 5-8. I know a few Type R owners that have swapped in the Type S ECU because their Type R was just to firm on a day to day basis.
Now, if you want to get up into the bigger, more powerful, heavier and expensive cars, there are a bunch of choices out there from Corvettes, Mustangs, BMW M cars, Audi's etc. But if you're looking for something that is light and puts an emphasis on handling over big power, there's really only a couple cars left that fit that mold, like the Miata.
Long story short, my current lineup is an Integra Type S as my daily and I have a Miata Club RF with the BBR package as my autocross, track day, weekender car. We also have a truck for all the utility type stuff. Went that route because the Miata engine is so robust and the cost of consumables is so low. Tracking a car is expensive as hell and I went with the lowest pain route, but also wanted a well-sorted and fun daily driver instead of something boring. I guess I could have poold that money and went with something in $80-90k range, but I wouldn't put something like that on a track and doing track days and autocross is something I really enjoy.

Mazda MX5
Civic Type R
Some of the GR Toyotas
Supra if they are still being produced
Porsche 718 or Corvette if you want to pay obscene "market adjustments"
I don't think society values fun cars anymore. Everyone wants an angry looking box to drive around. The handful that still exists are pretty expensive.

That engine may suck, but it's not entirely the problem there. Every Ford that comes out of that Chicago plant is a quality disaster. Parts missing, loose fittings, tools left in the car, similar but incorrect paint colors on some panels, etc. are common stories.
I don't mean just bad by modern standards. I mean bad by any standard - even for Ford.
Like they throw the wrong serialized part and just let it fly - which is all fine and dandy until Ford needs to issue a recall and doesn't have a clue which trucks have bad parts because some idiots in Chicago can't follow Ford's already shitty process.
It's like Chrysler in 1981 in there or Mercedes's Tuscaloosa plant in the late 1990s. Never buy anything made in by that Chicago plant.

The 2.7 and 3.0 are actually very, very good engines. They did have a valve recall recently, but that is recent and a scenario that presents itself very early on or not at all. The 2.7 specifically has a great track record for reliability.
Now the 1.5 and some of the 2.0 engine when they moved to an open deck are the ones with the coolant intrusion issues. The pre-2016 and post 2020 versions of the 2.0 have a different way of managing the coolant (drilled instead of fully open). The 2.7 and 3.0 never used the open deck architecture that killed the 1.5 and 2.0. The 3.5 was engineered as a naturally aspirated engine that they redesigned to turbocharge and has definitely had some issues.
The ST models specifically use a closed-deck in the 2.0 and semi-closed deck with support webbing in the 2.7 and 3.0. So they never had the fatal coolant intrusion issues.
Long story short, the 2.0 outside of 2016-2019, the 2.7 and 3.0 and any of them in ST's are very good engines. The 1.5 and 2.0 from '16-'19 are very problematic.

Subaru BRZ/ Toyota GR-86
If you are looking for something different the 2000-2007 Toyota MR2 Spyder with a 2ZZ or 2GR-FE engine swap is a mid engine fun toss able car.

I made this point in a thread the other day. We could have some fun to drive and utilitarian sports wagon/hatchbacks but all the American market wants is shitty handling marshmallows on wheels crossovers.

I just figured they still put the 3.5 or 3.7 in them. That's the motor I was referring to.

The increase in power from the turbo will never match the joy you got from the NA vetch crossover your s2000 had.

I own a Tesla and it’s fast but it’s not near as fun to drive as a powerful gas powered car or a good car with the right weight to power ratio.
Very boring once you get over the snap your neck back 0-60.
