North Louisiana, born in 82. We called it pump as kids.

Yep… born in 79, grew up in Shreveport, we definitely used the term “pump” regularly in that regard. Haven’t heard that in at least 30 years ??

I have never heard of it until Lance Z on Houston ESPN radio talked about it years ago.

Never heard that. Asked my husband and another friend just now and they have not either. We all grew up in Baton Rouge. We all would have just said “You can ride on the handlebars.”

Called it pump in SW LA whether on handlebars or back platform in 1960's bicycles

Haven’t heard that since I was a kid. Avoyelles parish here, and yes we would ride “pump”.

Gay hadn't been invented back then. I think the term comes from the fact you had to pump your legs harder when you had that extra weight on the bike.

From S. LA…Gave a lot of rides on the handlebars in the 80s and I never heard of that term.
