I do it. I think it’s respectful, but...

I was driving on a four lane divided highway. There are headlights up ahead and I see cars turning right from a country road into the right lane of the highway. I moved over into the left lane and stop waiting for the rest of the cars in the procession to get on the highway. The procession was nearly a mile long. There was even a school bus in it.

After the last car, I start driving in the left-hand lane. Not fast, but enough to pass the procession. A car from the procession pulls over into the left-hand lane and blocks me and everybody else behind me from passing.

This goes on for about 5 miles driving 45 miles an hour. I’m getting pretty irritated but what the hell. Im not in any real hurry other than wanting to get home. I have a right turn coming up, and since this guy’s never let me pass, I merge into the procession to turn right. As I get into the procession, we change counties and a new police car starts leading the procession. But now they lead it in the left-hand lane. All the cars in front of me have now moved into the left lane. I move forward unimpressed.

As I’m passing on the right, I slow down and look at the guy who was blocking me. He’s rolled down his window and leaned across his wife. He’s cussing me out and flipping me off.

Am I the a-hole?

How the hell did you let a funeral procession pass you?

Don't try to repass it.

Nah I'm putting the a-hole tag on this guy.

I stopped in the left lane as they all entered the right lane.

People die and get buried every day. You tried. The minute they start to give me a problem would be the minute I'd go back to regular driving without being an a-hole.

Honestly, your explanation sounded complicated but it sounds like you attempted to be respectful, so I’m saying the other guy is the a-hole. Hope this helps.

I’m all for giving them space within reason but they don’t own the road. Some dude blocking people from passing a slow moving procession is a mega douce move

Divided highway...no. Two lane road or non-divided road...yes. This is only for the funeral procession coming at you. I'd pull over to let them pass if they were behind me but I also play it safe, if I can't I can't

If it's two lane I pull over out of respect, I have been in too many of the processions, trying to pass one is a DICK MOVE.

This is why the procession should be kept small. If it’s more than like 15 cars, they’re being excessive. I’ve seen some like this one that seemed to go on for a mile. Only the immediate family needs to be in the escort. There’s no reason your third cousin, your co-worker from 20 years ago, and your neighbor 4 doors down need to be in the procession. It makes it a lot harder for the general public to stay respectful as the procession gets larger. 90% of people want to be respectful, but life can’t come to a standstill. Especially in the city.

Taking some time out of your life for respect puts your life at a standstill, you might to reassess your priorities.

Life is for the living.

I don’t know about you, but there is no need to take over a four lane major road for my procession when the time comes.

Cheers!

Seeing as I'll be burned and scattered somewhere in the depths of my property...NTA

Land is for the living

Only pull over for first responder processions

Only immediate family should be in it

If they are behind me, I'm not pulling over as they shouldn't be going faster than the speed limit. Honestly, not pulling over at all (other than first responder), only just making sure I don't split the group

No.

My family stopped asking for “funeral processions” in the 1990s.

Years ago, funeral processions just involved a short ride from the church to the graveyard. Now it’s more complicated. Only close family(or really close friends) come for the graveside service anyway. It just us and the gravedigger. We say a few words. Read a scripture. Pray. Then make sure the gravesite is tidy before we leave.

I’ve pulled over for processions IF I notice them, but in general they should be reserved for a limited number of vehicles. 10 or so at most.
