That’s your opinion but , over 75 million records sold would indicate otherwise. IMO, In Utero was Nirvana’s best album. Every song on Nevermind was great! It’s one of those albums you can play from start to finish. Most of the rock today is garbage. Not all but most.

Grunge was definitely a music for the time just like all music I’ve heard over the past few years seems vapid to me. Interestingly, my 13 year old son and his friends actually started getting into my 90s playlist a little in carpool this year. Truly must be an angsty teen thing.

AIC ,Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, STP, and the list goes on... all of those bands are still in regular rotation on radio today. Grunge is just an name they came up with at the time to identify them. This is rock music! Most of it was pretty darn good too. My kids listen to it and they are 13 and 15. I think that says a lot. I do see where you’re coming from though.

I was a freshman in college in 91. It was awesome how music changed on a dime. Then like everything else it got way overhyped and then over-commercialized and then the market was eventually saturated. But it was crazy how it basically knocked 80s hair rock the frick out seemingly overnight when PJ Ten and Nevermind were released my first semester a month apart.

I agree with everything except the Courtney killed Kurt comment. She did have a large impact on his suicide imo. Just before he tried to kill himself in Rome with 30 Ruffies and a bottle of wine, he asked his live at home nanny if she was cheating on him. The answer he got led him to believe she was. I can’t stand Love, but she certainly didn’t have him killed. Everything about Kurt screamed suicide. The guy was fragile mentally and health wise. Heroin did not help at all ! All the clues that he may have done what he did were written on the wall.

Perhaps I should have said that grunge was the voice of GenX, a small generation disillusioned by a childhood of divorce, latch-key childhoods and often overlooked by parents who remarried and focused on Gen Y. A specific music that came from a specific time. But I don’t think that’s exactly correct, either. Perhaps that’s my personal experience and why it spoke to me during my teens.
My 13 year old son and his friends def started appreciating it more this year and appreciated the difference in sound and meaning compared to what’s on the radio now (for most part). Maybe they are just becoming more “thinkers” now or teen angst is setting in. I do think they are more disillusioned than the previous generation at that age but that could also be because they are being raised by GenX parents.
Unfortunately, I only hear the great bands you listed on the “older music stations” but my Spotify playlists mean I rarely listen to actual radio anymore.

My wife was watching American Idol and they had some girl on there calling herself a songwriter and it was so horrible I wanted to punch the TV. Juts nothing but cliches thrown together to try and be ironic poetry of some sort but it was just pure shite.

I disagree with this, though. I grew up with rock and consider Motley Crew, Aerosmith, Led Zepplin, Metallica, Rolling Stones,etc rock music. I had young parents who listened to those bands so maybe that’s why there’s a distinct difference in sound for me. West coast grunge has a different sound and feeling for me although I was a fan of both.

He didn’t have nearly the vocal ability as a lot of singers but it worked well enough for his songs, even live. I wouldn’t want him to sing the national anthem or anything.
Actually, I love some of his (your?) songs but I never got the impression Huey Lewis had a lot of vocal range either.

That’s a perfect example. There’s a couple good songs for a day out on the boat or drinking beer and shooting pool but it’s all pretty mindless and forgettable.

The Life on Display record that came out in 2003 is fantastic. I still blast it today. Freak of the World, Bottom, Nothing Left To Lose, Already Gone, Away From Me. Of course everybody I know thinks it sucks which is probably why I love to play it.
