The White House in Washington DC is about the same height above sea level as Baton Rouge.

I think the White House lawn is like 54' elevation and Baton Rouge is like 56'.

Should we move the White House? People are fricking idiots.

ETA:

Isn't Manhattan like 10 ft above sea level?

Sounds like some of the comments posters on here would make about a natural disaster in Haiti

Not just Haiti. Just read the comments on here in just about any thread about the west coast.

Yes. The capital being in Washington, DC triggers me because it was the capital and built on slave labor. It should leveled and moved elsewhere.

The point is that getting federal aid should and often does have stipulations as to how it can be used.

I can see your point, but there seems to be a population of people who are under the perception that Louisiana had this coming. As if this flooding is the same type of flooding that happened during Katrina.

Yeah that's ridiculous and I've seen similar suggestions.

This

If FEMA gave these stipulations to the folks in the heart of New Orleans living under sea level in a hurricane zone, I'd get it.

But from my understanding, this is flooding just like some of the other great floods we've seen in Tennessee and wherever over the last couple of decades, meaning, it seems like it was more of a freak thing and not necessarily made worse based on location.

Traditionally the capital of states was placed somewhat near the center of said state. When the US of A was a country just on the Atlantic seaboard, Washington made sense. Now it does not. It should be moved to the middle of the country...Near St. Louis...like maybe Ferguson.

Is this an area that is prone to flooding moreso than any other area? If not, I don't think it's a reasonable request.

It's federal aid. If the government says you can have the money but you have to build higher or safer or whatever, that is reasonable. If you eant to do whatever you'd like, don't take the federal aid. I would have that opinion in LA, CA, or NY.

Many of the commenters are likely hypocritical, so don't confuse their inconsistency with my position.

I guess that means no more support for earthquake victims in California, tornado victims in Tornado alley, blizzard victims way the hell up there, etc...

The public comments section of any widely read news website is where the dumbest people on the planet congregate to vent their suppressed sadism.

Tigerdroppings is basically a civil meeting governed by Robert's Rules of Order compared to KATC, WBRZ, The Washington Post, etc.

Think about that.... scary.

I told you before, When Floods hit the South/Midwest, the east and west coasters run their mouth about living else where, not feeling sorry for people in flood zones, they knew, etc.

But these cock suckers have 10 homes lost in a fire, and they want the World to hold hands and sing koom bya.

East coasters have a storm and flooding and it's the end of the world, president better be here, and let's pour the money out for them.

Been watching this shite for a long time in the comments section.

Most people who don't live in Louisiana think that Louisiana sucks. Why should I get upset about it?

Next time a terrorist attack wipes out a few thousand people living in a large city up North, I won't get upset about it.

Think that makes us even.

We should just shut the TX and LA oil refineries down for a couple weeks and then ask if they want to reevaluate their feelings.

While we're at it, lets shut down the southern Louisiana ports that handled 533 million tons of cargo in 2014. That's only 5 of the top 12 ports by tonnage in the United States.
