Sad that you even have to say it but every storm there are 2-3 deaths from generators

Until you go in there to put more fuel in and the fumes kill you.

Under no circumstances should a generator be used inside any structure without massive ventilation and even then I wouldn’t advise it. Put it outside 100 times out of 100.

You would not think that would be an issue. You would think that people are smart enough to figure that out, but the stupidity of people is unlimited so...

And make sure you secure it. A guy that a friend of mine knows in Louisiana was running a generator to run a fan, light and refrigerator after a hurricane.

He lived in the country right by a highway. Early one morning he woke up because he was hot. His fan wasn't running so he was going to get his other fan. But his light wouldn't work either. He thought it was weird because he could hear his generator running.

He grabbed a flashlight and checked the inside connections and everything was good. So he heads outside to check those connections to find the extension cords laying on the ground by his running lawnmower.

Someone saw or knew he had a generator and cranked his lawnmower and stole his generator

We ran it in my detached shop with the door above the exhaust facing out north with my double doors facing south and my west door open as well. Carbon monoxide detector didn't go off in there.

Need to be careful with your neighbors placement. We had one who put his generator near our window unit to the west. We were asleep when they got it fired up and it was hard to hear over two window units.

Our CO detector in my bedroom went off and we cleared out to see what the deal was.

I'll put mine on the back porch or if have to put in garage, keep all doors and windows open, exhaust as far to outside as I can and still protect it. CO2 detectors inside and out.

Would install a full home generator but have never needed until this year. Am actually considering a Tesla powerwall for energy storage and solar panels on part of the house. Entergy sucks arse.

The cranking the lawnmower part was smart. That way the guy wouldn't notice as quickly and they would have extra time to load it up.

Northshore Tiger Girl, what you want to do is keep the exhaust from coming in the house or enclosed area you are staying in.

Lets say you have a big fan.
Open the door and have it where the fan pushes the hot air outside.
That will also double as wind from the fan pushing the exhaust From your generator from coming into the house.

You can also turn the unit to where you muffler is facing away from the window or door to your house if you run it on the front porch. if the wind pushing away from the structure that will help also.

The goal is to keep the exhaust from coming in the house.

Yeah he of course has no idea how long he slept after his generator was gone. He said he would have woken up to silence. He also said he was really groggy and it was probably at least 10 minutes before he went outside and could have been as much as 20 minutes.

Good thing was the next morning there was a truck and trailer selling new brand name generators off the highway close to his house.

He went and bought chains and locks and a bigger brand new generator. He said he was outside securing the new generator and FEMA pulled up and reimbursed him for everything he had purchased. So besides being uncomfortable for a few hours he was actually glad someone stole his generator.

So another PSA would be to keep all receipts for anything you buy after the storm.

Hell, my friend got a brand new generator, the hookup to his breaker panel and a brand new Weber grill for free. He has a shopping list ready for the next hurricane

Also keep them away from open windows. Use carbon monoxide detectors if you can.
