The French might say shop for groceries as "faire les courses" . The verb faire can be translated many ways. One way is faire = to make. So, a person in So Louisiana with some French background might say "make groceries". The late great Swegmann's adopted the saying to stress their unique experience...drinking while shopping was encouraged.

Could have been me.

Homeowners insurance got my beach vacation this year. Thanks again Louisiana, guess I'll go to Lake Charles and drink enough to pretend it's the Gulf of America.

The old guys tell me it was like a Home Depot, Academy, and grocery store all in one stop.
And there was a bar up front for the men to drink and smoke while they waited for the women to finish shopping.

I don't understand the appeal for sitting in the sand in 95° weather, getting a sunburn and staring at the ocean for 8 miserable hours like it's a big TV screen. The channel never changes.

Your mindset is all wrong.

Umbrella or canopy. Alternating in and out of the sun.
Always a nice breeze coming off the water.
Don’t be a fat or weak arse not used to some summer heat because you’ve been sitting under an AC every day.
Enjoy beer or other drinks often.
Music is a must, at a reasonable volume.
Relax, it’s okay.

I went as a kid. We drove in from the “country” to Baton Rouge and all I remember was my mom would always bring and ice chest and there was a place for us kids to watch cartoons on Saturday morning while mom shopped.

This was in the early 80’s so I’m sure it was nothing like the good ole days.

oh, I was a kid in the early 80’s, too, but my mawmaw lived across Vets from the schwegmann’s in Metairie

And the one on Chef Menteur had the cheapest school uniforms shirts

My family banked at Schwegmann bank
and paid the NOPSI bill there, too.

Up until they closed in the 90s we’d go shop on Fridays and get oyster loaves on the way out for dinner

Probably not as great as when my mom was a kid but still pretty good for the 80s/90s

It's so sad to drive through there, knowing it's the spot where Princess Diana died.

Then you don’t like the beach, and that’s ok. Go to wherever you’re not miserable to spend your vacation. This isn’t complicated.

This whole thing has just gotten a little annoying really. I love the beach, I’ve loved it since the first time my parents brought me there when I was a kid several decades ago. I live within a 4-5 hour drive of the most beautiful beaches in the US, so that’s primarily where I chose to go once or twice a year.

I also love the mountains, I enjoy the mountains from time to time. But I don’t shite on people who prefer going to the mountains vs the beach. Honestly you never see anyone doing that. It’s like people have an inferiority complex towards people who prefer the beach, and it’s very weird
