I'll echo this, especially for the ladies:
I have had two female peers dies in their late 40's from colon cancer recently. You should be getting checked just like us men do.
Despite the pre-colonoscopy jitters and putting it off for a couple of years, I had my first one this year and got a clean bill of health. The prep is worse than the procedure. Colon cancer is the (a) silent killer and the only way to catch it early is through a colonoscopy. Do it for your loved ones.
Also, guys, if you haven't had a heart work-up and you're in your 40's, go ahead and do that. You may be the most fit guy on the planet, but you can't outrun your genetics.

I am riddled with polyps. I'm getting the dreaded DOUBLE scope next week, down the esophagus while under local anesthesia and then the butt rape and polyp removal after that. Besides the potential cancer, there is the bill. frick both of them.
I'm in my 50's. No tragedy. I lived through disco and The Meme Wars of 2016, I can live through this. But if not, meh. They make new humans every day. Many who smell better than me.
Almost reverse butt sex ahead

Yeah I've been putting mine off but I probably need to get it done. I'll be 47 in a few months.
The shitty thing is that the recommended age was always 50 until I was about 45.5, so I knew it was coming up and then, bam you're overdue

The first one I had was brutal because you still had to drink that horrid gallon jug of prep and the drugs they used for anesthesia would knock you out of commission for several hours after.
Last one I did prep was a couple of pills and sweet, sweet propofol (sorry MJ) for the anesthesia.
It was like taking the best nap of your life with no hangover effect.
The only one I've done was the 'jug o prep' and is was indeed quite awful.
The brief propofol nap made up for it, and the after meal put the positives over the top. It was one of the most enjoyable meals I've ever had for some reason.

I'm in my 60s and got put on a ten year rotation after being on a five year. I hope this is okay.

I read some horror stories recently about colonoscopies and complications stemming from them and it's scared the hell out of me getting one. I'm not of age yet to need one with no family history but still.

I am on a test study. They are working on a blood test to replace colonoscopy. All I have to do is give a vial of blood once a year.

Great post- and he's right: DO IT.
You won't even know it's being done. Take a nap; wake back up in what seems like a quick minute as if nothing happened.
Note: Someone will need to go with you to drive you back home....They won't knowingly let you drive afterwards due to the anesthesia- even though you'll feel fine.
Do it for your loved ones- and yourself. It's a life saver.

I posted all this for one reason. If you are over 45 years of age, get that colonoscopy done ASAP. It could be a lifesaver.
My father died at age 49 from colon cancer. Went for a routine colonoscopy at 45, they found a tumor that had gown through the walls of the colon and attached itself to the liver. The DR said that the tumor had probably being growing for 9 years. They removed the tumor, but the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes and it was terminal at that point.
Fast forward to my life. Due to my father's history, I got my first colonoscopy at age 36 and they found 4 polyps. I can only imagine what might have happened 9 years later if I had waited until 45. I now have a colonoscopy every 3 years.
Bottom line is that a colonoscopy is a relatively inexpensive procedure. Get them done. It's basically a one day vacation. It can literally save your life. It saved mine.

I'm 57 and haven't done it. No excuse, just got tired of physicians after some other surgeries

Just got my second in five years last Friday. Found 9 polyps and will be going over their labs next Friday.
For those that have never had this done, the actual procedure is a breeze. They knock you out and you never feel anything during or afterward. Seems like it takes five minutes from going out to waking up. The prep the night before is the biggest inconvenience. Sitting on the toilet most of the night and not much sleep. No big deal.

I’ve had two in the last 2 years; a 3rd may be on the way. I’ll know in 10 days,

A colonoscopy is a big nothingburger. It's a painless procedure that no one should be afraid of.
I have done several of them. The procedure is no where as bad as folks make it out to be.
The prep the night before is the most challenging part. Had to drink 8 oz. glasses of the stuff every 2 hours.
Nurse said to mix in some PowerAde(not red nor grape) to help with the taste.
Just a little advice, get some baby wipes because you are gonna go several times on the porcelain throne.

I know this sounds stupid but how do you schedule one? I don't have a primary doctor. The rare times I have to go somewhere is just to an urgent care. Can they schedule one?
Find a local gastroenterologist in your area. Get a few recommendations from folks in your area.
Make sure the Doctor has been doing the procedure for a few years. You don't want a newbie performing this.
I skipped the 'primary doctor' route. Why waste a half day and shell out a co-pay just to have him send you to a gastroenterologist?
BTW, find you a primary doctor. You want to establish a good long-term relationship with them.

My primary told me that you don’t even need a referral to have a colonoscopy…just call up and make an appointment.

Good reminder! This and prostate checks are 2 things that some guys just seem to avoid. I’ve been getting them for 14 years now and no problems so far but I have cancer in my family so not gonna risk it.
I get the ole 'finger' test every year too, along with a check of my PSA levels and an x-ray. So far so good on that.
Gonna get my cardio system checked out soon. My PC Doc recommended these tests:
*Get the Cardiac Calcium Scoring test.
*Get the Carotid Artery Ultrasound scan.
*Get the PAD( Peripheral Artery Test)
*Advanced Lipid Profile test.
*Especially get the 'Widow Maker' LipoA looked at.
Haven't done a CBC test in a few years, I am due for that too.
Most of these are fairly simple test that are non-invasive.
I know all this sounds like a lot but what is your health worth?
