I've been getting various magazines with a 'free 12 month subscription' sent to my home address for the past year. I've called the publishers to cancel and asked them who had paid for it in the first place. It's a third party company called National Publishers Exchange that also goes by National Magazine Exchange which apparently scams you into a bunch of subscriptions come renewal time. A quick Google search brings up several BBB type websites detailing tons of anecdotes of elderly folks getting taken to the cleaners.

Anybody have any experience with this? This may be a really old scam but I'm hoping to spare someone or someone's family member some frustration by raising awareness.

Magazines make money from advertising which is based on their circulation. With subscription rates for print continually dropping, it's in their best interest to keep their circulation up. I'm not sure how they're going to scam you into anything at renewal time of you haven't given them any information. I've randomly started receiving a couple of magazines as well and haven't experienced any issues with anyone trying to collect.

Magazines are a scam in general. Interwebs, pops.

No idea. One of their reps just said we thought your demographic would like this particular magazine.

I get exactly two magazines-

One is "Garden and Gun" Garden & Gun Link

The other is "WVLiving" (I know someone there) WVLiving

If someone asks me about magazines (to sell them to me) I lie and say I don't want any.

As long as you don't sign up on your own and give them any payment of any kind, fck them.
Don't worry about it.

It was way back in 2002 in Phoenix. They would hire teenagers that dropped out of high school or ran away and they used to drive around the country in vans selling magazine subscriptions door to door. I was 21 felt bad about the kids sob story ordered some magazines so they "could make their quota and get their bonus to send money back to their family" kid robbed me on the way out.
