SO for example.. coming from Memphis toward Atlanta... will I have to go south on I-65 to 459 and then take that back north to 20?
WIll that be the best/ fastest way to get through this>

That's probably the easiest way from Memphis to Atlanta, which really wouldn't be that much longer than going 20/59 through downtown towards atl

This was trying to go north on Carraway/26th st/Hwy 31 tonight.
It would have taken an hour or longer to get through this but I hopped over two blocks and ran 24th and was out of downtown in 10 minutes.
Thankfully the pass through traffic is following the detour signs.
I've never seen this many big trucks in downtown.

I'm talking just about the city of Birmingham. The rest of city outside of downtown/Avondale resembles Jackson aesthetically and demographically. The suburbs are great though and way nicer than anything in Louisiana.

That will change for the better this year.
A real estate company from Denver has bought 4-5 dorment buildings downtown and will remodel them this year as mixed use.
Another outside company just bought a pool hall on southside for 2.3 mil and is going to build a 17 story mixed use on that site. Downtown Birmingham is expected to blow up this year.

That's great but a downtown resurgence has been happening in pretty much every mid-sized/big city around the country.
I have to admit Birmingham's future does look much better than BR though. If St. George happens, the city of Baton Rouge will basically become Jackson overnight.
