I apologize. I should have remembered AK... I feel sheepish.

I'd love to live in a cooler climate with more interesting terrain. My wife was absolutely adamant that we not move our kids around while they were in school. She went to 7 different schools growing up and never felt like she fit in anywhere. Sometimes it's not always as simple as it seems.

It can be tough when you have kids. Mine were 2nd grade and kindergarten when we moved so it wasn't bad at all.

Ours are about a decade apart so it's been a challenge.

I'd love to live in Montana but my wife would be miserable there. She'd be fine in East Tennessee/West NC though and has agreed that she'll go when our youngest is done with school.

That's about 6 years away but then I'll be dealing with parents nearing 80. I guess we'll see how it goes.

It can be. It’s cheap to live here. I live a couple blocks from the water, but don’t take advantage of it.

Make the move. It doesn’t have to be permanent. Since family is the main thing keeping you in a place, just prioritize visiting. As many people have said, FaceTime makes it much easier.

As far as kids, of course it’s easier to have dependable family to help, but it’s certainly something you can do on your own. Moving kids from school to school is a much bigger deal as they get older, but I think you have until they are about 10 years old before you approach any major issues.

As the sports saying goes, the best ability is availability. For regular jobs, the best ability is flexibility. If you are married to a location, you are married to its opportunities.

Mom tells the story of when Dad quit the State and went to work for Citgo. Said it blew his mind when she immediately agreed to moving to Florida without hesitation.

She had never lived outside North Louisiana before. She knew it meant a bigger and better life as it was needed for Dad to climb the corporate ladder though.

And that's how I went to school in Tampa, Tulsa, NO, and Memphis, all before the 6th grade year ended. Also kinda explains my lack of speaking accent.

Most limitations people face are self induced.

That includes geographic location

This type of question is so specific, no one can answer it but you. With that being said, I'd err on the side of moving, can always move back and the chance the move works out is most likely greater than the cost of moving back and forth.

One other thing generally isn't considered, we stayed to be close to family and friends, eventually moved to a great place and now the entire family is likely moving out of BR. Someone has to be the first to do it.
