I did not attend any school in New Orleans so I have no dog in this fight. However, when it comes to average SAT scores, National Merit Scholars, and college placement, Newman is so far ahead of every other private school that it makes a Polish horseback unit fighting German tanks look like a fair fight.

I respectfully disagree. Jesuit annually has 2-3 times the number of National Merit Finalists than Newman and I suspect compares well with average SAT. The only reason Newman may send more kids to "prestigious" schools is Newman parents are more likely to be able to afford a school like Duke, whereas many Jesuit students in the accelerated program may get into a school like Duke but accept a full scholarship to a state flagship. And I know you said private, but Franklin blows Newman out of the water.

Move to St. Charles Parish and attend Destrehan or Hahnville for free. Graduate in the top 10% of your class and have the same opportunities as the private/Catholic school kids.

The NOLA obsession with high school is so ridiculous.

Jesuit is the best school. But you went to U High so your kid is probably not smart enough to get in. Or he'll take Spanish. You should check out Holy Cross or De La Salle. Maybe he can be a new ninth grader and no one will know or care about him anyway

If boy, Christian Brother's for middle school. It's the only Catholic school in NOLA I'd send my kid too. And it may not be Catholic that much longer...

I can't afford kids.

Talking late 90s here, but if it's anything like it was, I came here to champion CBS as well. It is really an amazing experience. Going to Jesuit was very cool as well, but something about Christian Brothers just felt unique. An experience you wouldn't be able to replicate elsewhere. Also, in terms of getting into high schools, CBS is the best feeder for those schools.

My top 3 teachers from MS/HS came from CBS.

RIP Brother Gregory. Most badass teacher ever.

This, Hahnville's 2014 class earned over $2 million dollars in scholarships. We have our issues but if your kid is in honors or AP's they are getting everything they need to be extremely successful. Most regular classes aren't bad either, but discipline could be better. If your kid isn't a strong student, we have a great vocational education curriculum.

Mount Carmel & Dominican are better than Chapelle and Cabrini academically IMO, FWIW, etc. As for Ursuline, I know next to nothing about their academics. Sacred Heart and McGee (not a Catholic school) are the best girl schools in the city but are crazy expensive. Take it FWIW, Mount Carmel has a lot more students than Dominican and Chapelle, and they have a loyal alumnae base.

Back when I was in grammar school, four girls in my class attended Dominican and everyone else was evenly divided between Chapelle and Mount Carmel. Most of the Chapelle girls ended up attending ULL and Southeastern for college; the remaining 5 or 6 went to LSU and have all done very well. Most of the ones who went to the other schools have taken 5+ years to graduate. All of the Mount Carmel ones either went out of state to Bama, Ole Miss, UGA, etc. or went to LSU and have all done well.

Chapelle is obviously a much better school than Rummel but I tend to disagree that Chapelle is better than Mount Carmel. Look at the college stats.

CBS was a joke in the 90's just as it is now. Unless you had brothers beating your arse whenever they felt the urge to do so you did not attend the real CBS. If Brother Edward sent you around to pick up trash after you had just taken a few fists to the face from Br. Amadee or Lawrence you had the real CBS experience.

Yeah... so what's going on with that? Are they going to bow to the Archbishop's wishes and add grades?

I have several friends that went to CBS and they all loved it, it always seemed like a great school, and it seemed like it was great partly because it was so small and focused. If it becomes just another Catholic K-7 school, I don't know if it will be as good.

From what I understand, they are not. They may build another school with certain grades as a compromise. But the city park campus will remain as is. If forced into a corner, they're not against leaving the diocese.

That's nice to hear. I hope you're right. That campus can't house any more students. If they're asking them to move and start over elsewhere with more students, I would hope CBS would tell them to stick it up their ***. And people would argue the Catholic Church isn't a business...
