If he's really truly excited about going to LSU, then he should. I can't imagine being that happy about something, but being talked out of it by an ignorant high school kid. His schoolmates' opinions won't count for shite in about six months.
Which is why I was shocked when I started hearing him talk less and less about LSU. And it's not just one kid, it's several and also his college counselors are encouraging him to "reach higher" to put it nicely and they really got in his head which is not hard to do ... he's your typical very impressionable 17 year old kid that what's to be accepted by his peers.
I always thought LSU had a good reputation so this was a bit of an eye-opening experience to me.

Maybe he should go somewhere else, because his idiot, LSU alumnus uncle apparently doesn't know the definition of "impressionable".
ETA: haha, nice edit. Maybe not so dumb after all.

I understand where you coming from but I so badly want to see him become a LSU alumnus b/c I feel it's something that will bring us closer together so it's hard for me to let go of my dream.
Besides, it'll give me more of an excuse to make a trip to Baton Rouge lol. I absolutely love Baton Rouge food and just being around fellow LSU Tigers.
So basically you want to live vicariously through your nephew. And someone from Texas who attends a prestige private school is all upset about the republicans (if you want to research something, research La politics. It's not a party issue)?
Your nephew is being bullied for wanting to go to LSU.
Because your nephew likes tailgating at LSU and all that, he wants to put that as a top priority over academics?
He wants to come to LSU, but because of the republican elected officials he might have to settle for going to Duke, Tulane, Virginia, etc?
The best advice you can give him is to at least stay away from Rice. Evidently it turns people into retards.

LSU does not have a good reputation when it comes to academics. I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily bad, I just think it gets overlooked by the reputation of it being a football and partying school. That’s what’s appealing to most out of state kids.

LSU isn't really highly ranked or respected in academia and is actually having financial issues due to Louisiana's Republican controlled state government obsession with cutting funding for public universities in the state.

What does he want to study? If it's an area that isn't an LSU strength then may be best to look elsewhere. If he's going pre med or pre law then going to an affordable but still solid university like LSU is a great idea.
If he does choose LSU, what's important is surrounding himself with other top tier students. Join the honors college, consider a frat with a high gpa, seek out leaders on campus, etc... There are plenty of incredibly smart and hard working students at LSU that will help encourage staying on the same arc. Lots of dummies out there too but just gotta how the kids is smart enough to not be influenced by them.

I smoked dope, ate ecstasy, drank, and tried to get laid every single night while I went to LSU and still graduated in the upper quartile.
If your nephew likes to do any of those things, I strongly recommend LSU.
If he has the ways and means to go to a Rice or SMU, he’d be foolish not to.

A private school kid from Dallas going to SMU or Houston to Rice is guaranteeing the production of a entitled kid with zero perspective or clue.

and it's "an" entitled not a
never use a, if the following word begins with a vowel
but that seems entitled
