Im not sure if you all understand that the main reason for the whole house generator aside from the oblivious powers everything, is that you dont have to procur fuel for it. It really becomes a hassle during a prolonged outage finding and transporting fuel.
If you have nat gas this is non issue. My setup was $1500. I’ve used it once in a freeze.
10-15k for using it once in 8 years is pretty hard pill to swallow.

Go with a water cooled version

You cant cross the 2. Different communication between transfer switch and generator controller.

Most would have zero need for a standby generator in your current locationn. Most people in our neck of the woods have a definite need for them.

I don't see the love for the Generac, expensive for a system which is definitely not top of the line. It is going to be interesting the next time we have a major storm and those thousands of natural gas generators go into use at one time. What no one know is if the current NG infrastructure can supply that much gas at one time. It is not like a winter day when heaters run for 20 minutes at a time then shut down.
I took this question to a public service commissioner, his answer: "No one knows and I don't know if that calculation has been done, but it is a concern".
If it is a concern, someone smarter than I needs to figure that out before it occurs.
I currently have an 8KW gasoline generator that I have not had to use in years, I am in an area of EBR that has Demco, our power just went out for a few hours for Ida, we were out of town, so spending $10-15K on a generator seems foolish.
At the recommendation of an electrical engineer, I will likely install a power pack system with a small generator to charge it, it only takes about 1.5 hours a day of running the generator to power the house. He has a similar system on his house, he is very happy with it. Cheaper to install and run, plus the noisy generator is seldom used.

I install kohler standby generators in SWLA and highly recommend a 26kw unit for most homes with electric heat. Total install cost should be around 11k.
Anyone you recommend on the Northshore?

Put in a 26kW Briggs & Stratton 2 months ago.
10 year warranty was worth it for me.
Who did it and what was the cost?

the phrase serves as the anti-climactic punchline in bait-and-switch stories that abruptly end with Loch Ness Monster begging for $3.50....so the correct answer is 3.50 LINK

Westinghouse

We received our generator on June 22, 2024. The whole-house, 50-amp, test-run with propane went well. I had watched several videos on it since I’m new to generators. We had just had an electrician add the 50-amp box, additional breaker and interlock kit to our main breaker box. We purchased the inlet box and connection cord as a kit. The machine comes with the propane hookup hose with attached regulator, but no electrical cords. Anyway, next came a real test! Hurricane Beryl hit our area (Houston) on July 7 & 8, just weeks later. We lost power during the storm and had to wait for the wind and rain to pass before setting it up. We used it for four hours, again using propane, until the power came back on, many were not so lucky and waited 7 or more days for power. It runs our whole house well. There are appliances we haven’t tried yet—washer/dryer/dishwasher. Importantly though it ran our central A/C and ceiling fans (check your own wattage needs first of course). We’re very pleased with this generator’s performance. The remote start/stop fob is so nice—I was able to start it from inside the house.
This is the way. You can purchase a nice RV for the price on a full home Generac install. My 2$... inflation man.
And a 65inch 4k TV for the Garage.

I have a roughly 1,420 sqft townhome. How big of a generator would I need? Ballpark price?
I just dropped $12,000 to have a Generac 24kw standby generator installed last week for a 2000 sq foot house.

You'll have plenty enough kw. We installed a 24kw Generac about 3 years ago. Our house is 3,300 sq feet with 2 A/C units and it runs everything fine. I think we paid $9,800 back then for the unit and installation.

I rather have too much than not enough.

We installed a 22k gas generac… total cost was right at 16,000.
