I've changed the unloader valve, the nozzle tips and made sure that the hoses don't have a hole in them or leaking when connected.
Any tips to fixing this issue?

I’d RA to move to home & garden board

Isn't that by design?

not that i’m of any use to fix it, but could you provide the brand, model, and age of the pressure washer in question?

Gas powered
Craftsman GCV 160 2.3GPM

make sure the rubber O-ring is still in the coupling

In the past, mine occasionally get some air in the line. And I just keep running it for a minute or two... and you can hear it when the air gets exhausted and it comes back to full flow. Kind of surges...
May be a different issue though.

Only time that happened to me on an old pressure washer the pump had gone bad.

I was leaning that way but it still builds up pressure and when the trigger is initially squeezed, it works like normal for about 5 seconds.

I had this trouble once and it was the on/off/choke switch.

Mine does the same thing sometimes.

Ask your husband to help you.

I have noticed that the engine does not "rev" up like it used to when the trigger is pulled.
Might have to look into the choke lever.

isn't supposed to let loose some water under pressure

It might not be the pressure washer but the lack of water pressure on the supply side.
My neighbor borrowed mine and he was having the same issue - ended up being low pressure coming out of the faucet.

Seconded. Had a similar issue and this was the problem.
