World War 1 vets are all gone. But they were still alive when I was a kid. Last combat vet died in 2011.

As a young man, John Wayne knew Wyatt Earp.
Earp spent the last years of his life in L.A. trying to peddle his life story to the movies (unsuccessfully -- no one in H'wood had ever heard of him). John Ford eventually learned about him and tried to initiate an Earp biopic, w/o success. I suppose Wayne met him through Ford.

Earp died in 1929. Two years later a biography of him called Frontier Marshall was published and sold well, finally making Earp famous. Frontier Marshall was filmed several times, once by John Ford as My Darling Clementine.

Another interesting presidential fact: Former President Bill Clinton has no biological children.

Earp died in 1929

Before his death, he was a sometimes-paid, sometimes not-paid consultant on Western movies. He spent a lot of time hanging around the studio cafeteria drinking coffee, sometimes with a young prop man/extra/aspiring actor named Marion Morrison, later to become famous as John Wayne.

Wayne worked as a prop man at Fox, Ford's home studio. His early roles were mostly bits in Ford films. I'm still going with my theory that Wayne knew Earp through Ford, until proven otherwise.

152 Years Later, The VA Is Still Paying Out A Pension From The Civil War.

quote:

The Department of Veterans Affairs cuts a pension check check every month for $73.13 to Irene Triplett, an 87-year-old who lives in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Why? Because she is the livingdaughter of a Civil War veteran.
