Cold ones on me fellas. Lots of science I wish I could understand better, but y'all speak that baw and make it easy. My only source for weather.

Plus, this way I don't have to see margret orr's turkey neck flapping around as she's getting excited.

That was a pretty incredible late night/early morning on TD watching that thing bottom out. The OT shined that day.

It was just a bizarre combination of events. Most people went to bed expecting it to be no big deal. Then it started strengthening. Then it started wobbling. Then when it came time for the update Multiple planes having problems and then one finally took off and we were all waiting for it to cross the hurricane. Then it crossed the west and the storm was ridiculous and we waited those few tense moments as it looped back over the strongest part of the eastern eye wall and was terrifying.

I will never forget those few hours.

That was recorded at the Birmingham airport asos site.

The crazy thing about that is it means they probably got more than .4 inches in 5 minutes because those tipping bucket rain gauges will miss rain when it tips to record. So it's it's raining exceptionally hard rain is missing the "bucket" or sloshing out. But I digest. Main point is it was probably a higher rate than was recorded.

That's because the boat finally took the senior level radar met class and is killing it.

My very first post in this joint was in a weather thread. These threads are my favorite, but I hate seeing the destruction and loss of life and property. It is never easy.

I hate to be an "actuallllyy" neckbeard but it wasn't .4 inches in 5 minutes.

It was .4 inches in 12 minutes.

So a more reasonable 2 inches an hour rate.

The asos sites don't measure from the top of the hour. They measure from the bottom of the hour full METAR report. Which occurred at 9:53. Then they measured .4 inches by 10:05. So it was 12 minutes.

They're saying the 9 inch/hr rate came from Shelby Airport south of Birmingham. I'm crunching the numbers but the math doesn't add up. Everything I come up with was about 5 inches/hr.

I'm in the rural areas of SW Birmingham and it rained very hard, but for only a short period of time. A tornado warning passed just S of us.
Lots of standing water in areas where it not usually this much.

The 3 Birmingham area airports, Birmingham, Bessemer, and Shelby County, all report about 1-2 inches ofc rain over the most recent 3 hour window.
Meanwhile, the Tuscaloosa airport reports just over 2 inches in 3 hours.

It was baffling why the NHC didn't pull an upgrade at 10 that night. It left people going to bed thinking it had steady stated its self, but between a rapidly improving satellite appearance and the plane in there that evening showing a closed and shrinking eyewall it was apparent it was stronger than the 110 they measured on that last flight.

I remember our conversation through all of that well and still damn glad we got you and others to safety.

The only thing you should be worried about is that color scheme giving you diabeetus.

You're just gonna get some moderate rain showers.

You may catch a Severe Thunderstorm Warning out of it, but not likely a tornado. Probably not even severe, though.

Same here at my place in the McCalla/Bessemer area. We probably aren’t far from each other from where you describe.

I’ve got an anemometer run up a tree that’s recording 20+ mph wind gusts, but nothing anywhere close to the 50 mph gusts they’ve forecasted. Obviously the storm is far away and that could change, but once the storms roll into the mountains they almost always dissipate and we don’t get weather anywhere close to what’s been predicted.
