A dead body found inside a stone pillar outside a California grocery store on Saturday afternoon could be the remains of a man who was fleeing from authorities earlier in the week, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department lieutenant said.

After a strong odor led to the grisly discovery, authorities said it's possible the body belongs to a man who ran into the store on Monday — fleeing from deputies as he was suspected of stealing a vehicle.

quote:

Earlier, in the morning, a manager at the grocery store could smell a strong odor coming from the pillar, according to Sheriff's Department Lt. John Corina.

Corina said the manager called a plumber, thinking there was some sort of sewage problem there. When the plumber arrived and started to knock away the pillar's stone, a leg and tennis shoes were visible, he said.

How the heck do you get inside a pillar?

I dont get it either

He had to die climbing in there, right? Otherwise, why wouldn't he just call for help instead of dying in there trying not to get caught

They never got hold of him, and according to Corina, the rooftop has access to the inside of the stone pillars where the body was found. It's possible the man fell or climbed into the pillar to hide from law enforcement.

That has to be one of the most miserable ways to die. Slowly starving to death in a pillar where you cant move.

Climbed into the suspended ceiling to hide from police. Fell into pillar opening from top. Was knocked unconscious from fall and / or got wedged in and asphyxiated.

We should all applaud this man’s transformation from a felonious thief to a pillar in his community.

The dead guy in the pillar is on the short list, but this year's winner should be the guy who was mauled by a bear when he tried to take a selfie with it...

It being in a grocery store isn't lost on me. I had a sensible chuckle over that little nugget of information

Lots of pillars are not weight-bearing, they're just there to look purty.

I'm not in construction, but most modern pillars are a steal or wood beam wrapped in some sort of cosmetic dressing, like stucco, drywall, concrete, stone, etc.

So I'm guessing he somehow slipped between the actual structural part of the beam and the cosmetic exterior. Whatever the proper jargon is.
