Do we still ban our armed forces from carrying guns on their bases?

That's a decision of the Base Commander, but still banned on most bases. There's no carrying on an AF Base unless authorized as LE, etc. Lackland may now be a joint base, I can't remember. When Base Commanders do authorize weapons, that just means a weapon can be in one's vehicle (not carry on your person). Other wise you have to check it into the base armory, which is a major PITA.

The vast majority of the folks in the military are not trained "shooters"

Man it could have been me, I was there last week.

But I don't take my pistol in my vehicle on days I go to military bases. It's to much hassle.

We've had 2 lockdowns at JBPHH over similar threat/reports over the past 2 weeks. Real or not, it hinders and wastes a lot of peoples time so who knows if this is a pattern or something an adversary is picking up on.
