So I tore my Achilles on Sunday and had surgery Tuesday. Last night I could not sleep and I think I had my first panic attack. It felt like my heart was going to pound out of my chest but my heart rate was normal. Never had this before and am wondering how to deal with some of the post op stuff.

I’m not in pain and stopped taking the Vicodin because I feel like that is what is making me worse. I’m also sweating like crazy and go from hot to cold. I don’t have a fever.

Doc opens at 7:30 so I’m going to call then, just not sure I can do 10 days more of recovery like this.

surround yourself with caring people. keep the surgical site clean. make sure you shave often and wear the wig until your hair grows longer

Usually the third day out is the worst. Also, during surgery, they pump you with a lot of liquids so your sweating might be your body getting rid of the excess fluid. Also it's about this time that all the meds they gave you are totally wearing off. Sweating could also mean an infection is coming on. Best to get it checked out or make a call to office.

I’m in a splint until not this Monday but next. Can’t access the wound. Pain is not a problem, it is the crushing anxiety and temp swings that are making this unbearable.

It’s Vicodin withdrawals. Or at least that’s what the chills and the stomach issues are.

Your body has been through a ton of stress man. It doesn’t know that the surgery was elective, it just views it as more trauma. So in 5 days it’s had two major traumatic events. Keep that ice on there and keep it elevated.

I had a similar reaction to pain meds while trying to go to bed after a surgery.

Also. Rent or buy a knee scooter (cheapest on amazon)

You can get out and about a lot more in the coming weeks when you’re still weight bearing restricted

St. Augustine, what did you do to help make you sleep? I slept maybe 3 hours last night and had a hard time with everything. I’m struggling this morning with some serious depression/anxiety and trying to figure out how to get out of it and better.

I was on the pain meds from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon. Would I really be experiencing withdrawal?

Most of that will pass in the next day or two. The sweating is likely just from the fluids they pump in you during surgery. Sometimes the anesthesia they give you can make your body go haywire as well. The one they used on me killed my appetite for a few days, so I didn't eat much and got nauseous and weak as a result. Have you been eating?

Once I got a full meal down a few days after the surgery, it was amazing how much better I felt.

I just went through a hernia repair surgery three weeks ago and had the same reaction. The sweats was the worst. I would wake up in a puddle of sweat and then would get the chills. I've had quite a few surgeries in my life and this was not my normal reaction. Never ran a fever, just the sweats, which made it difficult to sleep. I was on the pain killers for four days and it took about that long to get over the crappy way they made me feel. Hang in there.

Pain killers suck! I had to take oxycodone after a surgery once. The doctor prescribed me Xanax because he knew the anxiety would kick in hard and heavy when coming down off of that crap. The anxiety did show its ugly head, and I took the Xanax. It helped cool me down. After a few days, I was good.

It may be completely different for you, as we are all different. This is something you can speak about with your doctor. It may help, but it’s just a chemical Band-Aid.

Jesus, I had no idea that coming down after using pain killers for even a couple days for necessary pain management was so bad that you’d need anxiety meds.
