On my way to work in the morning, right about sunrise, I say out loud the things in my life I’m grateful for. It is a lot like a prayer for me. “I’m grateful for the roof over my head. I’m grateful for my daughter’s health. I’m grateful for my truck cranking and getting me to work” etc.

This reminds me to be humble and appreciate the blessings in my life, and speaks into existence my gratitude for God. The Lord might not bless me if I’m not grateful for what I’ve already been given.

Pray before getting up, giving thanks for my blessings and for any needs I know people have.

Uninterrupted talk with my husband over coffee every morning—without fail even if just 15 minutes.

Walk at least a mile daily.

Gave up a lot of social media and went back to reading more.

Got loose of a toxic friendship that was really weighing me down without me realizing it. So now I watch for those and steer clear.

Tried walking with wife. She walks too fast. Now she walks the walking track, I walk the neighborhood. Prime time away from each other.

I always try to listen to what other people say instead of waiting for my turn to talk. Being nice to people makes me feel better about myself.

Folks will go on and on about the importance of communicating but almost everyone thinks that means talking. Listening is far better as a skill than talking...if you listen long enough you will find all you need to know to talk. Way too many people are either talking or thinking of what to say next to hear anything.

Started playing soccer again. Helps me physically getting the exercise and helps me mentally/improves my confidence since I dominate the shitty adult league I play in even after taking 5 years off.

If I were a young black man I would start a NRA type organization for black folks. Seriously, if your goal in owning a gun is to protect yourself from a tyrannical government not many groups could make a better case for living with one now than black folks. Inner city gun shows would make a KILLING....sure, black folks are welcome in the NRA but I would bet there is a large, untapped population of law abiding black folks who would appreciate a lobbying group of black folks who are also pro gun.
