Porn made Elizabeth Smart's captor rape her more often.

Smart says in video for anti-porn advocacy group.
quote:
The man who held Elizabeth Smart captive when she was a teenager regularly looked at pornography, which "just led to him raping me more," the now 28-year-old woman says in a new video.
"He would just sit and look at it and stare at it, and he would just talk about these women, and then when he was done, he would turn and look at me, and he would be like, 'Now we're going to do this,'" Smart said of her convicted abductor, Brian David Mitchell.
quote:
"I can't say that he would not have gone out and kidnapped me had he not looked at pornography. All I know is that pornography made my living hell worse."
Smart was rescued in March of 2003. She has said her strong Mormon faith, plus returning to the activities that brought her joy before her kidnapping, such as playing the harp, have helped her process her trauma.

I feel bad for her, but in society at large, it's a virtual certainty that internet porn has contributed greatly to the decline in sexual crimes.

That doesn't discredit Elizabeth Smart's claim at all.

In all seriousness, I can understand how she would like to attribute her suffering to explicit sources which might have contributed to her captor's mental derangement.
But in the end, some psychos, rapists, sociopaths, etc., are just that way for whatever reason. Some people experience trauma which unravels their mind while others are perhaps just inherently evil.
The sick frick would have tortured her regardless of his recreational activities, and we have no idea how much worse things could have been made.
Still, there are some various sub-genres of pornography which clearly display outright violence and subjugation of women. BDSM, rape fantasies, and other aggressive sexual activities seem more befitting to malicious violence and pain than something synonymous with pleasure, such as sex. Then again, some people get off on that shite. For many, pain is pleasure.
I feel terrible for the woman. Few of us can ever know what it's like to experience something so terrifying and traumatizing as rape, torture, imprisonment, and possible mutilation.
I hope the bastard suffers the slowest and most agonizing death imaginable. And I hope his afterlife is only a further continuation of his deserved punishment.
However, I'm not sure it's fair to blame pornography for suffering. There are plenty of reasons to vilify the industry, but this seems like quite the stretch.

It is by no means a virtual certainty. In fact, it's a highly contested topic.

quote:
The harms of pornography exposure among children and young people
Flood, M. Child Abuse Review 2009 18 (6): 384–400, ePublished November 2, 2009
Exposure to pornography is routine among children and young people, with a range of notable and often troubling effects. Particularly among younger children, exposure to pornography may be disturbing or upsetting. Exposure to pornography helps to sustain young people’s adherence to sexist and unhealthy notions of sex and relationships. And, especially among boys and young men who are frequent consumers of pornography, including of more violent materials, consumption intensifies attitudes supportive of sexual coercion and increases their likelihood of perpetrating assault. While children and young people are sexual beings and deserve age-appropriate materials on sex and sexuality, pornography is a poor, and indeed dangerous, sex educator.
quote:
The pleasure is momentary…the expense damnable?: The influence of pornography on rape and sexual assault.
Ferguson CJ, Hartley RD. Aggression and Violence Behavior 2009; 14(5): 323-329.
The effects of pornography, whether violent or non-violent, on sexual aggression have been debated for decades. The current review examines evidence about the influence of pornography on sexual aggression in correlational and experimental studies and in real world violent crime data. Evidence for a causal relationship between exposure to pornography and sexual aggression is slim and may, at certain times, have been exaggerated by politicians, pressure groups and some social scientists. Some of the debate has focused on violent pornography, but evidence of any negative effects is inconsistent, and violent pornography is comparatively rare in the real world. Victimization rates for rape in the United States demonstrate an inverse relationship between pornography consumption and rape rates. Data from other nations have suggested similar relationships. Although these data cannot be used to determine that pornography has a cathartic effect on rape behavior, combined with the weak evidence in support of negative causal hypotheses from the scientific literature, it is concluded that it is time to discard the hypothesis that pornography contributes to increased sexual assault behavior.
