I'd also like to point out that it would be a whole hell of a lot more productive if people would refocus their Oprah hate onto our government. They're the ones fricking everyone who lost everything in Maui, yet most people probably don't have a clue how.

What tickled was that people immediately started comparing her to Dolly with this, saying that Dolly did so much with her own money and didn't ask people to donate to a charity she set up. Also, saying Dolly didn't go the media circus route when she did it.

When, in reality, they both did apples-to-apples the exact same thing. Dolly set up her charity through Dollywood, and encouraged her fans to donate to it after making a public proclamation of what she had personally donated and giving interviews to media outlets across the country.

People love, maybe live, to hate Oprah, and I can't fault them for it, and Dolly is Dolly......so, here we are.

And while I'm not an Oprah fan, she's given well over $100 million over time in charitable donations to all kinds of organizations from Teach for America to Feeding America and so on. It may not be appropriated how some like, but it's still charitable contributions nonetheless.

Small government fiscal conservatives just can’t stand it when people aren’t giving more of their own money the way they see fit. What a world

I believe people are upset because of the way it's being done. If Oprah had just donated her 5mm and not said a peep, nobody would care. But her crying about people being mean is objectively funny.

With respects to the government comment, I believe us conservatives would just rather the money go to the US, not Ukraine. Perhaps you feel differently.

She just donated her 100,000,000th book to kids in TN as well.

Pretty sure she's not doing it for attention since she's been donating to rural education and TN families since the 1980s.

Don't you compare oparh to Dolly. They're nothing alike.

She did.

SHE led with millions of her own dollars and didn't beg others to help the survivors.

She set up a non-profit charity through Dollywood.

and didn't beg others to help the survivors.

She asked fans and people in general to donate to said charity in a support video, then went on a media tour talking about it.

Donations flooded in organically

To her charity, after she did the above.

and rather than using that to refill her coffers she increased the amount she was giving.

Some of that had to have gone into operating said charity, which was the point of establishing it.

Dolly vs Oprah is the exact same story. People just hate Oprah and love Dolly.

Here comes the 2 progressive f@gs, 87 and shel to white knight for their progressive queen who has already bought up half of Maui Island for her personal use.

I mean she can't buy out the burned out landowners if she's busy giving all her money away. Step up, middle class!

Dolly did a whole telethon when you lied and told us she didn't ask people for their hard earned money.

All I am doing is comparing how the two handled donations following a fire, and that looks awfully damn similar. If you have an issue with that, take it up with Dolly and Oprah.

These are the emotional replies when you say something like this below, and your lie gets ripped apart:

quote:

Dolly didn't ask anyone to donate. SHE led with millions of her own dollars and didn't beg others to help the survivors. Donations flooded in organically and rather than using that to refill her coffers she increased the amount she was giving.

You lied, you got called out and proven to be lying, and your response was to have a temper tantrum and act like a 6 year old

quote:

I mean she can't buy out the burned out landowners if she's busy giving all her money away. Step up, middle class!

Cool, why did you lie about Dolly Parton?

Apparently, stating facts and calling people out for lies and inconsistencies is now melting down according to those who lie and provide inconsistent opinions.

I said something in the original thread about how it shouldn't be a bad thing for celebrities to use their celebrity image to raise awareness and money for things that need it, and IIRC I was downvoted too.

If you want to say that the companies managing these donations are bogus, then that's a different argument (and one that I would agree with). But like it or not, people respond to celebrities and I'd assume they raise more money than people just choosing to donate on their own in most cases.

And IMO it doesn't matter how much someone is worth, $5 million is a lot of money to donate to anything. I don't see how or why that's a bad thing. There are a lot of times when people like shel and pride are idiots about things...this isn't one of those times IMO.

It's pretty clear where the agendas lie.

Jerry Lewis telethons - cool
Bunch of celebrities on TV getting donations for our friends & families for Katrina - cool
Dolly Parton doing a telethon - Cool
Oprah asking for money - OH MY GOD, HOW DARE SHE!!!
