Aka lie detector test. Don't they just basically measure one's heart rate after answering certain questions? Explain to me how this is supposed to work, like if they ask someone "what's your name?" Ok "Bob," "how old are you?" "45", "did you stab that person to death?" Like wouldn't that final question cause almost anyone's heart rate to go up just given the nature of things and the whole situation? What am I missing here?

They're not admissable in court for good reasons.

I cannot speak to polygraphs taken outside of the government, but I believe they are all administered similarly. A tube is placed around your chest to measure breathing, sit on a pad that measures movements in the sphincter muscle, an oxygen monitor, a heart rate monitor, and a cuff around your arm to measure blood pressure.

They have only asked me to answer "yes" or "no" and wanted me to avoid providing elaborate answers.

They were invented by the same guy that created Wonder Woman.

That's all I got.

I would never submit to a polygraph. Mindblowing how many people do. They are notoriously inaccurate and police only use them to scare people.

First, to establish a nervousness level, they will ask if you ever blew a guy for money

Then they will compare that answer to questions about the murder

It's not a lie, if you believe it.

Committed murder, no attorney present, sure I’ll take it. Dumbasses do it all the time on dateline.

Taking a polygraph can only harm you in an interrogation. Whether you are guilty or not:

Ask for a lawyer and shut the frick up.

Well which way that might make someone nervous would depend on the person. But seriously I get that they say they try to establish a baseline, but wouldn't the questions related to the actual incident in question cause almost any person to have an increased heart rate just given the nature of it and knowledge of what they are being questioned about?

Had to take one for a civil service test before I got a job at the local fire department. I definitely lied about one thing and they never even brought it up.

If you were implicated in a possible crime would you answer a police officers questions without a lawyer present?

Your answer should be hell naw.

Would you take a polygraph?

Your answer should be hell naw.

Not easy to actually beat, but easy enough to render any results useless once you understand what and how the data points are being measured.

For example most people can lower or elevate their heart rate a bit by simply willing it, effectively altering blood pressure by detectable levels. Respiration can be manipulated both by rate and and speed.

Cops have used it as an exclusionary tool, but more often as mentioned, a scare tactic.

We got to 'play' with them a bit in the military as an MP, by play i mean to assist investigators training to try to spot deceptive answers, or attempts to beat/invalidate the results.

If you want to play with them, for a couple hundred you can get a 'USB polygraph' that plugs into a laptop or whatever. I think even Amazon has them now.

Don’t they use lie detector tests at fishing tournaments to see if the winner cheated? I think that’s a real thing. If so, seems pretty unreliable if what people in this thread have said is true about the unreliability.

And don't forget, they are under no legal obligation to accurately represent the results during an interrogation. You could pass with flying colors and they can tell you that you failed miserably.

Makes me sick.
