It wasn’t normal to go on weekend trips like this
Everyone having a car and the invention of the airplane are pretty recent developments

You’re right. Obese 50 + year old Americans who grew up with organized sports, cartoons, microwave food, and vacations to theme parks and the beach are pretty similar to our ancestors who didn’t have running water or electricity
You apparently have a very idealized and false understanding of pre-80s USA.

I’m not a boomer. It wasn’t that long ago that today’s consumerism was unheard of.
The point is what younger people today consider normal consumption was not normal even 40 years ago. You really don’t need all the crap you think you do. You’ve been manipulated to think so.

A lot of it just depends on if you bought a house before things went nuts. I make around $110k per year and currently save about $2500 per month which is about 30% of take home.
I am 34 and live very modestly in a 600 square foot apartment built in 1980 so I can save money. This apartment is one of the cheapest in Dallas at around $1600 per month
Around here, an entry level home in a good, safe area with good schools is about $500,000. My monthly payment on this home would jump up to around $4,500 if you include property taxes and insurance. That same home would have been attainable 5-6 years ago as it was priced at $300,000. Home prices alone have priced out the middle class from being able to purchase anywhere aside from the ghetto
Throw kids into the mix and I can very easily see how low six figure earners are struggling mightily. I think you'd have to make at least $200k to live in DFW with 2-3 kids, have a nice middle class home (purchased after things went nuts in 2022), and save for retirement & emergencies

good for you. You have parents..!
The difference between pre-80 USA and the current model is that modern man (including myself) uses money to solve problems, instead of using intuition and skills.
Then complain its too expensive. Which it is, buit we created it.

you are wasting your time bro. you and greatlakes
so many on this board make 120k a year and think anyone who makes more and expects more...is just too dumb to handle money.
they all think vacations, new cars, kids sports and eating anything but chicken thighs and rice is a waste of money and nobody should be doing those things
its how they deal with having a sub 100 iq.
you have to remember...these are the same people that think you should pay cash for a car even if its 0% interest, you should pay off your house asap even if the interest rate is below 3%........they arent exactly on the up and up when it comes to finances...but they do understand if they never leave the house, its harder to spend money.

Regional weekend travel was unheard of in the 80’s?
You grow up in USSR or something?

i have two 17 year olds in the house. They travel for school by air monthly, have college trips planned, a senior trip to Germany (14k for both)
College tuition will be 70k per year too. Got that coming in a few months, pray for scholarships.

NVM. Wallow in your perceptions of what you think is normal and entitled to.

Modern man has a lot more expenses than former man, i figured that would be something you agreed with.

When was it abnormal to take a weekend trip a few states away?
You’re acting like we’re discussing a months long tour of SE asia or something lmao

If they really need to go to a $70k/year school (they don’t) make them take out loans for it. Pay the loans off if—and ONLY if—they leave with a diploma.
ETA that diploma better be for something other than women’s and gender studies or some other useless thing.
