The FDA has approved the drug to be distributed and prescribed by doctors to hospitalized teen and adult patients with COVID-19, as appropriate.
If you are in the hospital with Covid-19, then at that point in time you are not considered healthy.
It has passed scientific rigor in the sense that it has been around for decades (1955); the World Health Organization has it on its list of Essential Medicines; and prior to Covid-19 has been prescribed to address malaria, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis.
I was under the impression that Sandoz donating 30 million doses of hydroxychloroquine was news from last week.

Not in the midst of a global pandemic. This drug is tried and true.
It's taken chronically (ie their whole life) by nearly all lupus and RA patients. It was given out like candy for malaria prophylaxis to those entering the Peace Corps.
The worst side effect (prolonged QT syndrome) happens in 1/10,000 cases.
When it comes to treatment, medicine is just a Risk/Reward balance. Giving this out to the masses will not kill nor injure anyone.. It should be freely prescribed by an MD/DO if he/she thinks the treatment is appropriate in the outpatient setting to prevent massive increases in hospitalizations and, therefore, deaths

Why are you even taking about Trump? You think doctors prescribe something based on what a hotel mogul says? They prescribe based on evidence the FDA approving something that's already known to be safe should be pretty easy.

It's not getting talked about much, but these drugs are also use to treat lupus.
I know four people (all women) who have it and don't know how to resupply because it's all being diverted to COVID-19 patients. Hopefully there's a substitute or the effects of not taking it aren't lethal.

Damn right it’s politics, really dirty politics. I’m pretty sure those hospitalized at the moment couldn’t give a flying frock about yours or anyone’s in D.C. right about now. Here’s two different links to qualified doctor’s with impeccable credentials that find it both insane & unethical that this isn’t being used as a standard treatment plan.

We all hope it works but right now the evidence that it makes one lick of difference is about the same as evidence that cell phones cause cancer. Purely anecdotal, observational. Not rigorous

right, it seems like the key here is also to administer the drug before hospitalization for it to be effective. administering it after the symptoms are serious results in many still dying
