FLORESVILLE, Texas - Exclusive body cam video on the night a 20-year-old with mental health issues was shot and killed by a Wilson County deputy. His family is now seeking justice and more training after our investigation found questionable training records.

These were the last moments of life captured not by Stephen O'Brien's family camera but by the body camera of the Wilson county deputies and a DPS trooper.

20 year-old Stephen O’Brien suffered from mental health illness. On the night of February 24th he went to the Walmart in Floresville and in an empty parking lot called 911 and said there was a man with a gun, fitting his description.

Why are all of these shooting from earlier in the year suddenly gaining attention from the media?

I have not read anything regarding this particular shooting, but I can damn near guarantee you that when the officers arrived, they did not know he had mental health issues.

Because there is a concerted effort to make police look as bad as possible.

Suicide by cop. Mental illness is a tragic disease.

I mean, have you turned on a TV in 6 months? There's been quite a lot going on since early March this year.

To be fair, both sides did this, though for different reasons.

if you watch the video, the kid has his in his pocket. pulls out what looks like a phone with camera flash on. that's a split second decision for a cop to make and it's usually a life or death decision. could've been a gun.

This.

Especially if it's just "mental health issues"... that could potentially make him more dangerous than a normal person.

Depending on their mental issues, I’d wager to say they may actually be much more likely to harm, stab, or shoot you.

If this had happened at Target then I would get banned because I would not be able to stop myself from making inappropriate jokes.

The family is simply saying the LEO was poorly trained. He was in an empty parking lot and should have used his car to take cover behind and try crisis intervention techniques, rather than continuing to advance on a suspect who was walking backwards. It's definitely suicide by cop, but could have been avoided with proper training.

Watch the video. That was good old fashioned Suicide By Cop. There was nothing that was going to change what happened there.

But also note that the family isn't rioting, jumping up and down, calling for arrests or expecting millions of dollars. What do they want? They want to be sure officers are trained in dealing with mentally ill subjects. Totally reasonable.

THIS is how things should go down. A full investigation and rational responses to the event.

Or we can treat mental illness properly and not coddle. Cops aren’t fricking psychologists.

there was a time we kept the mentally ill locked up and medicated for their own and the publics safety

now they roam the streets freely as groups calling themselves BLM, Antifa, and progressives
