Fido wasn't messing around.

But, on a serious note, why would you not listen to their instructions after he clearly tells you that he is going to send the dog if you don't stand up?

Serious question- who is responsible for the actions of the dog? Can't put the dog in prison. Can the handler be criminally responsible for letting a dog negligently maul a suspect?

he needed to use his hands to get up off that bean bag sofa

he wasnt sure what to do.

ETA:
If I was burning a tree in my backyard and next thing I know there are several cops with their guns drawn and a cop dog, I would be pretty unfrickingsure of what was going on.

With the training these dogs go through, probably yes.

Just think, if there was no body cam they would be claiming he lunged at them and the dog attacked to protect them. He'd then be shipped off to prison.

Obama is not wrong in wanting cameras on every policeman in this country. Say what ever else you want about the man, but this quote right here is 100% accurate

Open burning is not illegal in Utah. DAQ rules governing open burning can be found in the Utah Administrative Code (UAC) R307-202. This rule allows open burning of clippings, bushes, plants, and pruning's from trees incident to property and residential clean-up activities.

They should have called DAQ and let them handle it, makes sure he was following the environmental regs.

Sucks to be him.

After reading the story, it seems a bit excessive to kick his door in for burning a tree in a trash can in his back yard. Without a warrant I might add. But this article is based largely off of the victims law suit.

It's interesting they entered/broke down the door without a warrant over a disturbing the peace charge. If that's SOP, every kid that ever attended college is liable to get their face chewed off by a police k-9.

here is the cops side, I didnt see the page two part of the original linked article due to shitty page layout

quote:

The West Jordan Police Department says officers were at risk.

They said in a written release that in the weeks before the arrest, Hoogveldt had exhibited violent behavior that included an aggravated assault with a weapon and another time was found in possession of a concealed weapon by officers.

In the Christmas tree incident, Hoogveldt had threatened neighbors with a knife and started fires twice at a neighbor's home, according to the police. A fire was burning behind Hoogveldt's house as police approached, the release says, and "to protect the neighborhood and before the fire department could come in, officers had to secure Mr. Hoogveldt."

The officers say a large empty knife sheath on a table and believed that because of his history, Hoogveldt would pose a "lethal threat" if they approached him and sent in the dog to detain him, the release says.

According to court records, Hoogveldt was charged with aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, and reckless burning and failure to remove flammable material around a fire, both misdemeanors, in the incident. The case was resolved with a plea in abeyance to reckless burning and all the charges were eventually dismissed.

Well, since they are getting sued anyways, I see the cops coming up with every excuse available to them. The only charge that stuck was reckless burning. What a shocker.
