how are they able to transmit that data back to earth so quickly? i thought it was going to take months before the information came back?
or were the pictures taken months ago, and it was known the transmittals were going to take that time to travel back?

The picture in the OP was taken yesterday. Pictures take today will be posted tomorrow. The next round of pictures will be much, much more detailed than the picture in the OP.

Yeah, in the press conference one of the people mentioned that the connection is slow. She mentioned that they wished they could even get up to 56K.

It's not that it changes anything as much as this is the closest we will get to images of this planet (RIP) for a very, very long time.
It's like if we found bones of a dinosaur that had eluded us for years and it was perfectly in tact.

First off Pluto's not a planet. Secondly, Pluto won't be licking anyone's arse. I don't see how this is a fair comparison.

i don't fault some for their interest, i also can relate to it being of non interest to many. A picture of a planet that looks like many of planetary pictures i've seen before. Woopy. Not trying to derail the thread but i've read many comments not understanding why this isn't a bigger deal... i don't understand why it is a big deal to the masses.

Some people just aren't interested in space travel and learning more about space. I get that. For many others it is something they've dreamed about, researched, and explore however they can. The more we learn the better.
