Isn't it just a big ball of rock and ice? It's cool that we're getting these pictures and all, but are there any other benefits of the fly by? Don't we already know most of what needs to be known about Pluto?

By closest approach do you mean it is flying past Pluto nto the kipper belt? Or will it orbit Pluto and this will just actually be the closest approach?

It is flying past and will not go into orbit. It is going too fast to slow down and enter orbit.
It took the probe 9 years to get to Pluto. If it were going slow enough to enter orbit it would have taken around 30 years to get there.

Guess I'm out of touch w/ science. I remember making a Styrofoam model of the solar system for a science project in jr. high. Let's see if I can remember the planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. I must've missed the memo that Pluto was no longer a planet. When did that happen? Wonder what they're now teaching in the grade schools, is the solar system only 8 planets now?
