I'd love to live out there. The cost of living just shocks the shite out of me.

It is hard to come from a low cost of living area in the south to a more expensive area out west.

Oakland, east of MacArthur near Mills(all girl college). If you're on a hill, you are fine, flat parts are questionable. Trash doesn't roll up hill.

ask someone what their electricity and cable bill are in Louisiana, then ask someone there how much it is for them. might shock you to find that Electricity bills are $25/month when you don't need an AC and are out doing things rather than being holed up couch surfing.

Granted. But just the cost to get into a home...yikes. Are salaries generally high enough out there to compensate for the high housing prices when compared to wages/housing costs back here in the south?

So you commute to San Leandro from San Francisco? How is that? Hell just the tolls to get over bay bridge would be $60+ a week.

Most salaries are much higher. I'm a RN in the bay and the techs I work with make more than I did in New Orleans.

Yeah, if you are OT rich.

The Bay area is beautiful and extremely "touristy"

Desirable areas of the country generally are. You don't see many people kicking doors down to go take pictures in forest hill.

Not in my field but there's a chick here that claims to make 250k as RN so it probably is in others considering that's about 5x what they are paid here.

It is not uncommon for RNs to make $200k-250k+.

My tolls average $120-150 per month

so what's the difference?

250 vs 1 million

is about a $3,600 difference in mortgage note which is $46,000/year

If you and your spouse can each make 20k more by moving....ie job 40k in LA pays 60k in California.....isn't it just a zero sum gain?(mortgage tax reduction)

And your $1 million place will be $2 million before your 250k is 500k cookie cutter mansion. You could stay there for 10 years and sell your place for $1.5 million and retire on the bayou

I'm calling BS, link something stating this.

quote:

How much does a Nurse Practitioner make in San Francisco, CA? The average salary for a Nurse Practitioner is $91,921

quote:

UCSF Medical Center Nurse Practitioner: $147179.

isn't NP>RN?

Agree

I remember standing by the Bay Bridge at night and looking across to Oakland. San Fran is all lit up and beautiful, and Oakland looked like Gotham City.

you need a lot more than 40,000 gross to cover an extra 3,600 in mortgage payments

Also if you make enough to afford a 1,000,000 house then your mortgage tax deduction is going to be mostly phased out due to income limits.

When I first moved out here it was still during the housing crash, looked at houses in pleasant hill/ walnut creek area in the upper 300s. Damn, should have pulled the trigger, those houses are worth at least double now.
