Electricity in alameda uses amp rather than pg&e, so it's gonna be way cheaper

Buddy of mine is selling his place in Orinda. For around $3 mil.

If you make an extra $100k in the Bay Area you can probably afford a home that is around $600k more than what you would here, once you take into account taxes and other things.
So husband/wife pair where one is an RN and the other is in tech could feasibly go from a $300k home in the South to a $900k home in CA.
On top of that they have the potential to cash out on their home with a lot more equity than they would have if they stayed in the south.

I live in alameda. It is nice with food schools but isn't a haven for the young and single. It is very close to San Leandro. 10-15 minute drive on Doolittle, no freeway needed. If you are looking to be close to bars, restaurants etc. look to be within walking distance of park street. I live 1 block from the beach and have ridiculously cheap rent compared to current market rates. Anticipate at least 2k for rent for a 1 bedroom. Check our harbor bay rentals, Gallagher and Lindsey, Lapham realty and of course craigslist. The best thing about alameda is that it is completely walkable. Most days I don't even need a car. Good luck to you :)

Nice. I bet I have seen you in Safeway sporting LSU stuff. We live in alameda because of our kids and needing to be within a half hour response time for my job. The water is quite nice as well. If we were single I would live in west Oakland, temescal or emeryville.
