That airplane was actually referred to by many as the “V-tail doctor killer” back in its heyday.
I first heard it called a "Split tail Doctor killer.", at the time I though they were talking about a nurse, not a airplane.

Regardless it's a beautiful plane.
My personal top three for private use (that a non OT baller could buy used) Grumman Tiger, Cherokee 6 Piper and a Lake renegade.

Flew into knew Sunday. Word was the pilot had 10,000 hours or more. Any word on what happened? From what I gathered he was on base or turning base to final ... Just looking for some info on what went wrong with such an experienced pilot. Low and slow...stall or a bad time for engine out at a low altitude? I also heard a squall came through around that time... But it was a lot of speculation going around the fbo.

I would think it would have to be a weather anomoly.
A cessna 172 would land dead stick at that altitude no problem. Wings were intact after the crash as was the prop, so the only way it would lose that much lift would be if the pilot entered a spin at low altitude or weather event caused a stall. Stall speed on that thing is really slow, easy to recover quickly with a little attitude adjustment.
Sad all around. He was the senior instructor next to the owner Ankur.

quote:I just spotted this photo of last week's uncontained Southwest B727 engine failure on AV Herald, a great source for unfiltered airline news. Holy cow.
Damn southwest blows an engine out of MSY then a plane crashes into New Orleans. Not a good day.

I am flying Allegiant Air to San Diego in a few weeks. $70 round trip. I am expecting a 50/50 chance of something like this happening.
Anybody flown Allegiant before? Should I up my life insurance?
