My wife (no pics) is from Aliceville. The barracks the prisoners were housed in are still there... sorta. Been turned into commercial storage. On Hwy 17 near the Pickens Country Natural Gas office.
Funny story (now its funny, not at the time). My wifes father was a big hunter and he and I were "riding around" looking for deer between the morning and afternoon hunts. We drove every dirt road in the area and came to a row of beehive looking things that were cleanouts for a sewer line that the German prisoners built from the city to the Tombigbee. My future father in law told me "if anyone ever messes with someone in my family Ill kill them and put them in that" while pointing to the abandoned sewers.
Later in life we became best friends and he denied that statement being a threat to me to treat his daughter right. But I think it was.

I had those cabinets in the house I grew up in...even the fixtures are the same. At least until the mid 90's when my folks finally got around to renovating the kitchen.
