and it was a terrible day in his life, wife had been cheating and was already engaged to another guy, she told him shortly after this picture was taken

Despite outward appearances, the reunion was an unhappy one for Stirm. Three days before he arrived in the United States, the same day he was released from captivity, Stirm received a Dear John letter from his wife Loretta informing him that their marriage was over. Stirm later learned that Loretta had been with other men throughout his captivity and had received marriage proposals from three of them. In 1974, the Stirms divorced and Loretta remarried, but he was still ordered to provide her with 43% of his military retirement pay once he retired from the Air Force,[8] although the divorce judge stated that much evidence was presented to the court of Loretta's infidelity while Stirm was a prisoner. Stirm was later promoted to colonel and retired from the Air Force in 1977.[9] Loretta died on August 13, 2010, from cancer.[10]

Yeah, I think her death would have come about a day or two prior to my retirement.

Accidents happen all the time.

This photograph, taken in 1908, shows a lone vehicle on the Long Island Motor Parkway as it leaves New York City. The skyline of Manhattan can be seen in the distance.

The Tammy Grimes Show was the 1966-1967 season. So that dates the TV Guide issue.

"The Tammy Grimes Show is an American sitcom starring Broadway actress Tammy Grimes that aired during the 1966–67 season on the ABC network. The Tammy Grimes Show was one of the few prime time series of the era canceled after only four episodes."

It use to be common for people to use old news paper as a sort of wallpaper/insulation.

French pre-dreadnought battleship Carnot in 1896. The French made some really bizarre battleships in the late 19th century.

I knew there had to be a good reason. My grandmother use to talk about being able to watch chickens under the house through the cracks in the floor. She carried her baby sister around in a shoe box while working cotton fields in Sheridan arkansas.

If it is a sod-roofed house the paper would help keep the dirt from the sod from falling through the cracks between the boards and onto everyone and everything in the house. Not sure where the photo was taken, but homes in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, as well as other prairie areas frequently had sod roofs well into the 1940s.
