Chevy built special train cars to transport Vegas in the early 70s:

Called Verti-Pacs
If you look to the right of the pic you'll see Stak-Paks that were used to transport high value cars like Cadillacs. They were not transported on end like Vegas. The enclosed Stak Paks eliminated the vandalism and theft problems that normal auto racks, as shown in the Gremlin pic, had.
The Stak Paks weren't terribly successful due to cost/efficiency issues and were replaced by fully enclosed auto racks as you see today.
eta-Vegas had special batteries, angled washer bottles and a baffle in the oil pan to allow them to be transported essentially standing on their nose.
