My little brother had this. Those gadgets were lost or broken within a couple of weeks.

Two boatmen “legging it”, propelling a narrow boat through a canal tunnel in Cheshire, England.

Fortunately there was zero current in that canal as it was a manmade body of water relying on reservoirs for its supply.

Most English canals were similar.

Outside of the tunnels they had towpaths alongside for horses or mules to pull the vessel.

And the Brits being the clever mofos they are, here’s a towpath crossover so the horse leads don’t have to be unhooked at a bridge where the towpath switches sides of the canal:

(Note the cobblestone pavers so the hoofs could get traction)

Love the wooden shoes.
They probably made the same clip-clop as the horses that were used to draw the boats.

Notice how the graffiti is mostly tic-tac-toe. None of the abstract crazy lettering and four-letter words that you see over the last 40-50 years.

I often wonder when looking at graffiti on rail cars how much money was spent to paint something illegible and unidentifiable. If they had put that money (assuming they didn’t steal the paint) into something productive, they likely would have a better life. Rant over.

Florida cracker cow.
quote:

There have been cattle in Florida ever since Ponce de Leon brought them to the new world in 1521. When conflicts with the Calusa Indians caused his second expedition to flee, the cows they left behind were small, wiry animals of the Andalusian “criollo” breeds, uniquely adapted to Florida’s climate. Decades later, Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries near St. Augustine became the first ranchers in Florida, with help from local Indian tribes.
