I recall the killing of Stompanto, but I’d never heard the Sean Connery story before. Takes a relatively tough guy to do that to Mafia muscle.

I’m amazed those haven’t come back in style yet…. Everything else seems to…

Imitation Vomit.
Neat stuff, if you wet it with water and dropped it on the floor it totally freaked the girls out. Sometimes it induces some of the real stuff to happen but this was simple to pick up and stuff back in your pocket. Unfortunately, in my college days I loaned it out never to be returned.

Was Jimmy Dolittle already a "star" in 1932?
Yes. Well, at least in aeronautics circles.
Doolittle had pioneered flying on instruments and had won one of the 4 Harmon Trophies awarded in 1929. He also won many trophies as a pilot in the barnstorming circuit in the 30s, where he at one point held the speed record for a land-based plane.
Had the Doolittle Raid never happened, he would have still been one of the most influential pilots in American history.

Don't forget his rival/imitator, Louis the Lightning Bug. He taught us to be cool with c(h)ords.

Buena Vista Hotel Biloxi, built 1924, Hurricane Camille ruined it in 1969. Their minor league baseball park sits there now.

Before that there was a rebuilt Buena Vista hotel. The riverboat Biloxi Belle casino was then moored across from it and it became their hotel.
Mirage and Steve Wynn bought the properties and built Beau Rivage.
ACKSHUALLY...
It wasn't a rebuilt Buena Vista, it was a MOTEL addition to the original HOTEL on the north side of the highway. The new addition was built in the late 1950s and expanded vertically in the early 1960s, and both operated jointly for many years, connected by a pedestrian bridge over Hwy. 90:
from the back side of the postcard:"The Buena Vista Motel And Hotel...Right on the Gulf at Biloxi, Mississippi, combines luxurious resort hotel accommodations with a new beach motel. Your choice of motel or hotel service. 100% air-conditioned. Drive-in and park convenience. The double pool, heated in winter, is the center of a delightful relaxation and recreation area. Three fine restaurants. Cocktail lounge. Accommodations for 700 guests."
From the Paved, Not Saved website:
Business was so good that Love turned his thoughts to expansion in the late 1950’s, just as the automobile was changing the way the world traveled. Love brought in the Jackson architectural firm of Biggs, Weir and Chandler to design a daring new addition on the beachfront. The original addition was two stories and had 160 new motel rooms. The 6000 square foot swimming pool with three diving boards was a marvel for its day, but the plans for the place were even bigger... the new addition was such a great success that additional rooms were built on top of one of the new wings, bringing into being the Buena Vista that many residents remember today. WLOX, owned by the Love family, operated its television and radio stations from just off the Buena Vista’s expansive lobby.
James Love and his family continued to operate the Buena Vista until Hurricane Camille devastated the area in August, 1969. While the hotel survived the storm, it was soon sold off to a number of owners, the most famous of whom was New Orleans bandleader and musician Pete Fountain, himself a resident of nearby Bay St. Louis. Alas, even Fountain’s charisma couldn’t keep the doors open and the hotel was sold and resold like a plaything. The imminent construction of a loop for Interstate 10 dimmed many prospects for the property as owners considered different uses for the hotel. The old hotel continued in use until the early 1980s, mostly as overflow space from the motel wing. Its wide hallways were strewn with debris and the once gracious lobby sagged into oblivion.
