TLDR: Pickle Ball has a stupid name but is a lot of fun.

Long version:

About 7 weeks ago I started playing Pickle Ball. I had been a bicycle racer for most of my adult life (road and mountain bike). But stopped racing about 8 years ago. I was still riding pretty regularly but missed the thrill of competition.

The gym I go to turned one of their basketball courts in to three PB courts and I decided to give it a try. I used to play a lot of ping pong and racquet ball back in the day so I wasn't completely new to the mechanics of it.

I gotta say, even though the name of the sport is downright terrible, the sport is a blast. It's easier to learn and get "decent" at than tennis, and people of different skill levels can have fun playing together.

I play 4-6 times a week, for 2-4 hours and the cardio had been great. I was sore as hell at first since the movements are much different than cycling. Lower back and knees were the worst. But as I've adapted to the sport I'm not nearly as sore and I've lost 5 pounds.

I encourage any of you that are looking for something different to go out and try it.

The huge increase in pickle ball is proof that testosterone levels are at an all time low.

I've been playing disc gold some too. But that's just a good walk with some fun challenge. It's in no way a cardio workout.

Unless you're one of those rare guys that runs the course, which I've seen.

Right. Instead of drinking beer on your couch on weeknights, playing pickle ball for exercise means you have low-t

That's a cute response, and I get it. But if all you're doing is sitting on the couch and beating your meet to House of Dragons, then PB is at least something.

It's not full contact football, but it's no less of a challenge physically than half court basketball or a game of tennis.

How tall are you? As I mentioned in the other thread, I really like the sport, it is just played very low to the ground for taller guys. Wish I had the chance to play more often.

Are you playing competitively or just for fun?

I'm 5'8" and yes, a lot of the motion is a low bending motion. But some of the guys at my gym that are really good are taller. Having reach is a definite advantage.

I'm playing for fun now, but every match is a play to win, which is competitive enough for me right now.

I've gotten steadily better and I'm now able to hold my own with people who do compete in tournaments.

I’ve never had anyone try it from our group tell me they hated it and aren’t coming back. Most won’t miss the next opportunity to play.

It’s wild.

My dad is 71 and plays regularly and loves it. He's in great shape for his age.

He claims to be pretty good and beats players half his age regularly.

I’m a taller guy with unnaturally long arms and I’m pretty fricking good

Yeah, that was me. Great game, just be careful not to over do it.
Pulled the hammy going back for a look.
I think it's mild, so won't miss too much time.
