I've never been to one of their events before, but I've been to Austin's Flipside a couple of times and went to a PEX (Philadelphia Experiment) event in Maryland when I lived in DC. The regionals are pretty cool, and I think Flipside is one of the biggest ones. The Texas burners also run a thing called Orfunner the same week as Burning Man, for people who can't go to BRC. But nothing compares to the sensory overload of Burning Man. It really is indescribable. You have to have gone to really have any idea what it's like.
No offense to anyone, but I'm glad it's expensive. If it wasn't, BM would attract too many mindless fools who just want to get wasted and stagger around in the desert - which is not a good idea in and of itself. Many people have died there, and dehydration is the #1 cause.

I had all the sensory overload I could handle at state palace between1998-2003. BM would be cool but i don't think i could handle all that dirt.

It's dust, and yeah, it gets all over everything, so much that the car and RV rental places in Reno won't rent to people if they even think they're going to Burning Man. I had to lie and say I was there for a sales convention. 
It's way too dry for sweat and stink to be a factor, though, but the heat can be oppressive. You can't just show up with a tent. You need a shade structure and a shitload of water. The whole thing is a pretty intimidating experience for beginners.

Man I'd love to go, I'd stick out like a boner in church though.

All told, I think I spent about $2000 on the BM ticket, plane tickets, a rental car and supplies. That's really not much compared to the average vacation expense. I could have cut that down a bit if I'd gone with people instead of meeting them there like I did.
But it was more than worth it to face off against my brother in Thunderdome.
I also joined Fight Club for the week. Good times.

Cheaper than I would've thought, but not cheap.
What do you do there during the day? Don't know if I could take s whole week there, but walking around for a day or two seems like it would be awesome.

Thunderdome is exactly like it is in the movie. It's a camp of people who run it every year, and bring it to their local burn as well. The only difference is that you get padded sticks instead of blades, but people beat the shite out of each other anyway. The Thunderdome people are actually kind of nuts. They believe in the catharsis of violence, as far as I can tell.
Fight Club is a bit tamer, but not by much. The rules are that you're not allowed to hit someone above the chest. You win when your opponent gives up, but you keep fighting new, fresh opponents until you lose, and you will eventually lose.

Have been in reno every year at this time for the rib fest. I'll take stuffing myself with ribs over spending a week in the hot arse desert. The last day of the rib fest you see tons of people coming out of burning man, seems like a pretty good mixture of hippies and rich wanna be hippies.

frick man, I am so jealous. I'm pretty conservative otherwise but my inner freak would lloovve that, and the heat/camp conditions wouldn't phase me a bit. It seem awesome.
