Phone on Car Winsheild?

Got in the car after getting groceries at Safeway yesterday and there was a phone resting on the windshield - screen facing in - squarely in driver's side line of sight. There was no one in the vicinity.
Not wanting any part of whatever was going on, I placed it on the parking stop and left.
Any idea what could have been afoot?

What is a parking stop

Was this in Bayern or Cali?

Maybe someone found it right outside your door on the ground, thought it was yours, and put it on your windshield thinking you'd be able to find it easily.
Or they could have been planning to track you with it, follow you home and kill you.

A place where mislaid phones are placed...

Is that the concrete bar-like thing on the ground to keep you from going forward anymore? Never knew it had a name.

It's part of a gang initiation. Next, they'll be driving around at night without headlights and will kill anyone who flashes brights at them.

Somebody was putting groceries in their car next to yours. Placed their phone on your windshield cuz they needed a free hand. Forgot they did it. Drove away.

They use the find my phone app to go to your house and murder you. You must have an eagle eye. They're usually hard to spot. Happens all the time.

Have you pissed anyone off enough lately to want to hurt you?
Decent amount of MJ production & use there, possibly the result of a buzzed shopping trip for someone.
The phone could have been dropped in the lot and someone found it and your windshield was the most conspicuous place to put it off ground level.
Or, finally, an absent-minded person put it there while loading groceries or locking their car door. Folks with dementia put their car keys in the microwave, etc.

Pretty much all of these crossed my mind - the most likely being the phone found near car and a passerby placing it where it couldn't be missed.
While the more outlandish scenarios are unlikely, stranger things happen daily - just scroll through the front page of the OT.
I had put this out of my mind until getting in the car today and noticing the square outline on the windshield made noticeable by the morning condensation.
And did have to Google "concrete parking lot thing". I'm all about accuracy.

quote:Weird is relative. There's a fair amount of homeless people milling about. The growers keep to themselves and only come into town to shop. The biggest downside to the drug culture that is pervasive here are the meth heads and tweakers who seem to be everywhere. That and petty crime.
Weird shite gonna happen in the Emerald Triangle.
But the good - rural living, proximity to the oceans and mountains, and great (to me) weather - far outweighs the bad.
Except when you get killed as part of a gang initiation for turning on a phone you found on your windshield in a Safeway parking lot.

Gotta hate it when that happens.
Reading about it now on Wikipedia. Seems like a very interesting place to be. Are you
In the lumber industry?

No - my wife is from the area and we retired (from military) out here to be near her family. I push paper around at the local university.

I'd have placed the phone on the top of the rear tire of the car next to me and waited to see the thing smashed when they drove off

Did you leave your fingerprints on the phone?
If the phone is used in the commission of a crime you could be in trouble.
