That's too broad. You think they give math PhDs out like candy? If you walk into a math department and don't know what you're doing, they'll jettison you faster than you can think. Even at a place like LSU.

PhD's also price themselves out of a massive section of the job market.
Don't have the hands on experience/knowledge for a middle position, and overqualified for an entry level position.

The irony is that this is the exact kind of bullshite spewed by someone with a social sciences or humanities PhD, which are the primary fields churning out PhDs who are largely worthless to the labor market.

TD loves to dog on PhDs but my experience in STEM is that academia really isn't the goal for most. I only know of one guy out of the dozens from my PhD program that went into academia. Most are working in in aerospace and defense and got their foot in the door because of grad school experience. For some career paths, a PhD is a way to get a leg up for jobs in cutting edge industries.
Being a professor means moving around a bunch to get experience and rub elbows with others within academia and working 80 hour weeks in your 30's. All to convince some old dudes later that you meet their criteria for tenure.

Depends. Stuff like physics, math, or engineering PHDs have decent to great industry options.
Liberal arts PHDs, yeah that’s rough.

I noticed that anytime someone has a post about education or job shortages for college grads it's always some one liner joke or some snarky comment. As if y'all are doing anything that deserves high pay. Most of y'all aren't being clear about the Ai reality.

PhD students are cheap labor for professors who can run grants through them and make money off of them and the research. Churn and burn. No shortage of immigrants to do this with.

I don't know why the article is implying that professor jobs are the only jobs that people with PHDs get.
Still, I do find it kind of odd how universities keep jacking up tuition, yet they seem to have less professors than ever, and the professors that they do have are increasingly adjuncts who get paid like shite.
I don't know what the increased tuition money is going into, since it's clearly not to pay the professors. I guess that universities must have some huge DEI departments or something.
