Lol Using that argument, most every animal should be in a damn zoo

Every animal not born in the wild should in fact not be released to the wild. What about that do you not understand? It would be a death sentence.

Doesn't LSU normally get the tiger from a zoo or something? It's not like they can now let him back into the wild.

Mike came from Big Cat Rescue of Indiana. He was donated to them by the facility. In essence he was a rescue animal who was adopted and given a lavish habitat and is well cared for.

In my opinion he does not need to be "freed" by PETA or people who think he needs to be removed. Where on earth do these people think he will go if he is "freed"? If they want to raise money to give him an even better habitat then they should do it.

In 2012 Big Cat Rescue of Indiana was closed and the animals were seized and given other homes. Apparently there were issues with the care of the many animals.

Mike was born in captivity at a rescue in Indiana and was 2 years old before he came to LSU. He could not survive in the wild because he never had to hunt for his food. Mike has luxury living quarters including a separate air conditioned den that he can go in whenever he wants. Also, he has a swimming area and trees to climb on. Mike has his own veterinary team that cares for him 24/7. He wouldn't have this type of care had he stayed at that rescue in Indiana.

Indeed, Mike has it very good. The place he came from was closed down by authorities and their animals were seized by authorities.

On average, the tigers that are adopted by LSU usually live TWICE as long as tigers in the wild. (Four of the previous five 'Mikes' lived to be at least 17 years, nearly twice the normal 8-10 year lifespan of tigers in the wild. LINK )

Last time I saw Mike in his cage, he was pacing back and forth on 1-ft deep trail he had carved out by pacing that same path every day. Certainly a healthy habit for a wild animal. His cage is tiny, and the fact that people bring up that it cost several million dollars is hilarious because we all know how important that figure is to an animal.

A tiger should be fricking, fighting and killing. Mikes does none of the above.

Aren't all the tards here mad at him for not getting into a 7x7 cage on gameday so he can be driven around a crowded football stadium? It's too late to let him free, but the tradition is outdated.

I would prefer they focus on the poor guy in prison right down the road sucking gas fumes while rednecks and hillbillies cackle at him with their 3 remaining teeth.

I'd bet that tiger would load into the cage on game day, unlike our prima donna.

and why does LSU have a mascot that pays tribute to CONFEDERATE soldiers???

Technically, you're correct. We should get rid of Mike and have a Civil War reenactment on the field prior to every game instead.

My class at LSU voted that awesome habitat for Mike. He is a happy tiger. I know because he told me. Can't remember if that was Mike VI or VII

Can someone please answer, why does Mike actually exist as LSU's mascot? Why does any school need or even want a live mascot?

The trend of live mascots began long before any of us were around. LSU's commitment to keeping a live mascot is a huge symbolic and tangible dedication to a storied tradition. Mike is a at a minimum a recruiting vehicle. I loved to see him as a kid. My kids love to visit his habitat 30 years later. It doesn't matter if he comes out on game days. He's there 365 days a year as a fierce living breathing ambassador of our alma mater. We are the only real Tigers. Rawr bitch.

I agree Stankelbr, but then you have the idiots that want his handlers to cattle prod his balls and anus, beat him with a stick, or drug him to the point of near unconsciousness just to see him in the cage on game day.

If those idiots continue to exist, so will the ones trying to have him removed.

With the quality of Mike's habitat and the quality of his care, I think any effort to remove him from campus is misguided.

However, I applaud the vet school for not forcing or tricking him into that tiny cage for football games. This practice is outmoded and should be retired, given the attention this issue is getting.

So yes, if you ever want to lose Mike, then by all means, you overgrown frat boys keep bitching and moaning about him not getting in the trailer for games, and that he should be tasered to go in. This is one "tradition" that needs to die. Mike serves well as LSU's mascot and ambassador from his habitat.

Tigers are now an endangered species. Just be thankful you have a live tiger on campus. That tradition is justified and defensible, given Mike's care and his habitat.

Keep up the drumbeat of bitching and moaning because he doesn't want to go to games. I assure you, you will insure that Mike VI will be the last live tiger to live in that habitat.
