Tork was actually quite a musician himself. After he auditioned and got the part, he was very disappointed to find that many of the tracks they did were voiceovers and the instrumental parts were already laid down.
He confessed years later that being young and naive about the business that it was almost impossible to do studio work and perform on a set at the same time.

A little Monkee Trivia here. Mike Nesmith's mother was the inventor of Liquid Paper and sold the company she formed for $48 million dollars shortly before she died.

For pretending to be musicians?

The Monkees were a real band, but they didn't start off that way. They were all musicians that were hired to do the TV show about a fake band. From the beginning, they were contributing some to the music, but acting as The Monkees on the TV show was their main role, not actually BEING The Monkees. After the band became bigger than the show, they started to record all their own stuff and released albums, like 6 or 7. They were one of the biggest acts in the world in the second half of the 60's.

The Monkees were the original fabricated boy band.

Still remember the rumor that you could get high on liquid paper if you heated it up and...hell I don't remember the rest.

Only Nesmith and Tork were musicians. Jones and Dolenz were only actors, they began to learn the instruments when they started touring. Which is actually a pretty impressive feat in itself.

Nesmith was a actual guitar player/musician, Tork I am not sure, but everything on there records was played by LA studio guys.

Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart did a lot of studio work with them and wrote a lot of their songs.

Jimi Hendrix opened for the Monkees on his first US tour, until they had a mutual parting of ways

But he and Tork became friends and Jimi would stay with him in LA after Jimi blew up

That's true. A lot of songwriters were involved with the production.
