Really?

I don’t have any empirical evidence, but I’d say DFW has just about the same amount of Louisiana transplants if not more than Houston.

Kids will make new friends. Imagine generations of us moving and no social media. It will be okay.

If you keep that mindset you will trap yourself and your kids.

I’m honestly not trying to be a jerk, but I’ve seen people say they stay around because they love LSU — I find it highly bizarre. Just seems like this should not be a reason to stay in BR.

Nostalgia, people still feel the connection. But once you are gone you eventually don’t miss it. When younger I would still go to baseball, football and basketball games for a big time program. Lots of cities don’t have that. But I’m a big sports fan. And on occasions you could see multiple games in one day.

Not recently, but I left for Chicago 12 years ago and then left that for the Jacksonville area about a year ago. So far we love it here. Feels more southern culturally than most of Florida and outside of Duval have pretty great schools.

While my family is from Louisiana, this is the 7th state I’ve lived in, and I’d like to think I turned out ok. Kids adjust quickly and very likely won’t be talking to most of their current friends in 10 years even if you stay in BR. FL, TX, GA, and AL have the same sports opportunities as LA.

When I lived in Houston, damn near half my apartment complex had LSU flags hanging.

Prior to Katrina, we knew a handful of LSU couples in North Dallas, mostly people who were friends of friends. By 2010, there were LSU flags all over the place and our alumni association event attendance more than tripled.

Consider

1) Racial demographics (will directly correlate to crime)
2) % of year in warm weather

Start there, then find what’s in your cost of living range and your acceptable level of cold weather

Big decision one way or the other.

LA has a governor's election not too far into the future. Although I no longer live in LA I love the state and it grieves me to hear how bad NO and BR have become. Hopefully, someone will get elected who can begin to right the ship.

I don't think NO a or BR are capable or righting themselves.

Moving is a pain. But if you do, your children will make friends in their new environs. As will you. God bless and best wishes.

ETA: ^^^^ what Eighteen said above is good advice as well.

We moved to Utah. Beautiful scenery. Learned to ski.
But truth.....Mormons are brainwashed. People are wrecked here.
And folks who leave the church go off the derp end. Drugs, pill popping, extreme adrenaline. Its hectic.

I just bought 37 acres in Lake of Ozarks Missouri. Moving there as soon as my soon graduates highschool.

What you’re looking for can be found in NC. Specifically WNC, although Winston-Salem has a very BR before Katrina vibe to it. Lots of Louisiana people in Bryson City where I live. We have more crawfish/shrimp boils here than we ever did in BR. Just about every weekend during the season someone that left LA is having crawfish/shrimp flown in for a boil. I have three kids and they’re all playing sports, taking piano lessons, and my oldest is playing that dumbass fall guy game with his friends online and I’m in BFE

We fly down four or five times a year for LSU games, but I’ve become pretty bored with it. LSU has made it such a fricking chore to attend games, I find myself missing it less and less every year.

Pick a place and go. You won’t regret it.

Lots of LSU alumni and fans in NC. The weather is amazing, people/food are still southern, and COL is relatively low.

Exactly. People staying because they love LSU makes no sense. Is it because you like to go to home games so much, which only occur a handful of days out of the 365 days in a year? Putting that as a priority over quality of life and your family’s safety is silly, to say the least, which sound like the main reasons you want to leave. You should’ve already left a while ago. LSU and the stadium aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Enjoy life and catch a flight to see a game.

I moved to Huntsville for work and really enjoyed it. After a year there, I moved to Mountain Brook (Birmingham), AL and absolutely love it. Most people drive through North Birmingham so they see the worst that the city has to offer. However, Mountain Brook, parts of Vestavia and Liberty Park are great places. I am currently in Liberty Park because I’m building a house in Mountain Brook so I’ve had a chance to live in both areas. I’d recommend either.
From Birmingham, we are 2.5hrs from Nashville, 2hrs from Atlanta, 4hrs from the beach, 4.5hrs from Nola and 5hrs from BR. All of our family loves to visit because it’s a great place with great shopping and really good restaurants. We also have an airport that has direct flights to Denver, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston and we can be in Nola pretty quick if need be. If you want to watch LSU, you are 1hr from ttown, 1.5hr from auburn, 2.5hrs from Ole Miss and Miss St, 2.5hrs from Vandy, 2.5hrs from Athens, 2hrs from Atlanta and 5hrs frolic BR. We also have the SEC tournament here for baseball.
I don’t think you could go wrong with Mountain Brook, Vestavia, Liberty Park or Huntsville. If you love outdoors, definitely look in to Huntsville.

I've lived in 11 states. All have their pros and cons but for me, I've gravitated towards small to medium sized towns instead of cities/suburbs. Very stable and much less restrictive. I don't mind having to drive to go to an airport or stuff like that. I grew up an hour plus away from any Sam's, Costco, mall, etc.

You figure it out and have fun. In California, I went to the beach or rode bikes on the beach bike trail and went scuba diving. Here in southeast Oklahoma, I go to the lake a lot with a 5th wheel, boat and jet skis.

I’ve always wanted to leave BR. But one thing to consider is a family/support network. When shite hits the fan with health you’ll absolutely have to have people surrounding you to help pick you and/or the rest of your family up. You can’t replace family in this instance. Live by family

Knoxville, TN

What kind of searching did you do before moving?

General searches on demographics, schools, cost of living, tax burden... then we visited for a long weekend and loved it. Our main goals were a place close enough to BR (family) to drive in a day with good public schools without having to live in suburbia.

We moved before the little man was in school. We didn't want to pay private school tuition in BR.

My wife getting a WFH job was when we finally pulled the trigger and put our house on the market. Fortunately my boss let me work remote as well until I found a job in Knoxville.

You'll find this in any decent sized place.
