The OT has to be getting close to running out of things to bitch about if this is actually a topic.
If the OT were to ever commission an app to help settle its endless existential crises, it would be called, "Trashy / Not Trashy".

When a son calls his dad that it's term of indearment, some of you need to chill out.

I could call my old man motherfricker because, well, technically...

But I do chuckle when and older guy mentions homosexuals as "froots".

One of my high school jobs was as a fry cook at a restaurant and on my first day the fry manager had told me to follow around another fry cook that he told me was "fresh out the pen". I was very sheltered at this time
The guy really knew how to fry and I was learning a lot. Then he asked me "so you live with your old lady?" And I was like, " you mean like my mom? Yeah I live at home"
He laughed and shook his head and said "nah man I mean do you live with your girlfriend"

downright disrespectful

My dad often refers to himself in this way. I'm not sure how it's at all disrespectful.

I agree. I never liked that term and never called my dad that. My daughter called me that once and let's just say that she'll never do it again.

People who use the words "my old man" when talking about their father by LSUTANGERINE There's even some country song about dads called "My old Man". I recall hearing a lot of this as a teenager. I always found it downright disrespectful when I heard it.
Stop judging other people and look inward. Problem solved.

I never call my father "my old man" or my wife "my old lady". My parents raised me better than that.

You are from Arkansas so all bets are off. Too much correlation between your mom, sister, wife, etc.

I've never used that phrase to describe my father, but have heard others do it referring to theirs. I agree, it sounds disrespectful. I have also heard married couples refer to each other as "my old lady" and "my old man", also disrespectful, IMO.
For it to be disrespectful...first you have to know the meaning behind its use.
And broadly claiming anyone that uses it is disrespectful without knowing the meaning behind their use...is just plain condescension.

Really?
Me and my "Old Man" joke around together all the time with stuff like that. Its a great bond...having him as a close friend.
I enjoy joking around with my sons now like that. They refer to me as old man in a joking way all the time...doesn't bother me any.

Huh? Is this a bad thing or something? Thinking about it, it seems people do it when referring to their dad only. In other words, they don't say "I am going to my mom & ole man's house" or "my ole man and mom went on vacation". It is usually when their dad lives alone "Im going check on my ole man" or "me and my ole man are going to the game tomorrow" or "guess what the ole man up and bought the other day?"..
I really have never in my life thought more into it that someone referring to their pops.

At least I'm not ashamed of where I was raised and who my parents were. Too bad you are.
