In what world does this become acceptable? I've heard three already this morning. No one gives a frick about your day except the person on your phone. Maybe.

That is truly aggravating. I hate it as well.

It's not acceptable. Problem is...many lack basic manners and consideration for others nowadays.

I don't do it, but how is it different than 2 people talking in person, from an eavesdropper's perspective?

Even worse, it's disrespectful to the person calling YOU. They don't want everyone to hear their private conversation.

The two people in person can control their volume. Unlike the a-hole who has his phone volume turned all the way up.

You don't yell/talk louder when you are talking with 2 people in person.

People that talk on speaker in public will talk much louder from what I've seen.

Sounds like you're hanging around some pretty trashy people.

What's worse is listening to some loudmouth carry on a cell phone conversation in a doctor's waiting room.

They probably only watch reality shows where the people only talk on speaker phones so that the tv viewer can hear the conversation, and they think then to themselves that this sort of thing must be normal to do in everyday life.

Reminiscent of the Big Phone Guy skit YouTube LINK where the English guy yells into his huge mobile phone.

Only time I will pretend I'm on my phone is sometimes when I'm walking in the mall and don't want to get harassed by the kiosks run by foreign people trying to sell dead sea salts or hair curlers/straightners.

Meh, not any different than two people just standing there or walking having a conversation.

Is that considered rude now?

What do you expect from the same demographic that thinks murder of each other is acceptable behavior

Why does the person need to have the phone on speaker though?

Many times you will just see them walking around holding their phone out away from them....on speaker. How much more difficult is it to take that arm and rest that phone....on their ear?

That's actually a pretty good point.
